Low Speaking Score for TOEFL

Post by whx_epic » Thu Aug 01, 2013 1:56 am

Hi everyone,

I just took a TOEFL exam last week, and I got R-29, L-30, S-20, W-29.
I am planning to apply to top schools such as MIT, UCLA etc. Will my low speaking score hinder my application and should I retake my TOEFL exam?

20 for speaking is not too low. I think your Toefl score will not hinder your application. To make sure, you could certainly email all the departments above to ask, or email the directors of graduate studies.

In my opinion, it depends on how you want to get financially supported. I guess it will be difficult to get supported through teaching assitance. I am afraid, this will lower your chance to get accepted, unless you have other sources of support, then it will not matter much.

Thanks for all your answer!
I have asked for re-score and I juts got my result a few hours ago. The Speaking Section has been increased from 20 to 22.
I am still planning to have a retake though, I agree that it might hurt my chance for getting a financial support :( . What is the safe mark to get a support from teaching assistance?

I would say 26 and more.
