Scores from October testing

Post by prce » Wed Nov 19, 2008 8:02 am

Today i used the Scores By Phone service to hear my GRE score.

I got 690 or 64%.

I should say that i'm happy with the result because i took this test without without repassing anything from Abstract Algebra, Vector Calculus and without taking Complex analisys and Topology classes (I'm a CS major). Also didnt have the desired time to prepare for the General GRE so I postponed my graduate study for a year. I will take the GRE seriously in April i feel confidable in aquiring an 80 to 90% result.

I dont know whether to enroll in a Magistrate study for a year (without finishing it, because it take 1.5 to 2 year for it) in some local university (live in Bulgaria) and take some graduate level courses. Then with a stronger CV apply to PHD in USA.
What you guys suggest me?

Not bad on your first attempt, but if your target is a PhD, you should definitely aim for 80%ile or higher for the April test. Try to go over Abstract Algebra and Topology and finally, make sure you are able to answer at least 50 or more questions, (since normally you get at least four or five wrong even with perfect answering).

Best of luck,

64% is not too bad for the first try. As amateur said, you should get at least 80% to get into top schools. I know some schools they say they even don't care to GRE general , they prefer GRE maths

By the way, I do have a question : is it true that the November's score will be sent to designated universities on December 20 OR December 20 is just the day we are informed score ?

I'm worry it may be too late for schools whose deadline is December 1 :(

My first score came back as a 650 (54%). Since going to any top tier school is somewhat out of the question what should I be looking at?

GPA: 3.8 from UC Berkeley, 600Verbal 800Quantative, 650 (54%) Subject, Good/Great Letters of Rec.

@moo5003 : where are you going to apply for? UCB? I think LORs play a crucial role, so don't worry if you have good LORs
Hope to hear good new from you

I dont think I have a chance to make it into UCB especially with a 54% on the subject exam (though I wasnt going to apply there).
Right now I'm thinking about applying to:

NYU, UCLA, John Hopkins, Brown, and CUNY.

My problem is that I dont know my relative chances for making it into these universities. I know that ROC's play a role but I always assumed they were second/third to GPA and Subject GRE scores.
