However, I have replied to anyone who sent me an email asking about the status of their application.

Justin Holmer

Wow, many thanks Prof. Justin Holmer. I wish other universities follow suit here. Good luck Brownies on shortlist!

There is an acceptance from Washington University at St Lois on thegradecafe.com. I think that this means that I am not accepted there. Congrats for those who have been offered an admission to WUSTL.

Yeah, I'm aware the NYU tends to accept people into their Masters program w/o funding. Unfortunately this program is 50k per year and I do not have that kind of money. I have some offers though already. They're not from my dream schools (Brown, NYU, UChicago), but those were long shots anyway.

Just got an email from the graduate director that I've been declined from Brown. I seem to be getting one acceptance for each rejection so hopefully this pattern continues.

Finally got financial details for OSU! Yay! It might have been from emailing Roman Nitze, so if you haven't heard yet but you know you got in, shoot him an email.

Now I want to email more people and find out my status. However, I don't want to be annoying. I really like that Wisconsin sent out rejections before acceptances. I wish more grad schools did this.

Actually I got waitlisted at UT Austin so that kind of messed things up. So far for me it has been R (UCLA), A (Rutgers), W-listed (UT Austin), R (U Chicago), A (Wisconsin), R (Brown). I have also been getting an acceptance every 6 days so hopefully I get one from somewhere on Thursday.

No acceptance till now. If that pattern is universal, gonna wait for a first acceptance since I got my 1st rejection(Brown) today. Feeling...

I hope more professors don't view this site. I think most of us are emotional basket cases at this point and use this forum to vent. I would not want an admissions director to recognize me on here.

I agree. Though it would be nice to get the complete picture like Prof Holmer did, it will ease the wait and will save them lots of emails.

I wouldn't think professors(directors) visit this site, why would they? In the case of Prof. Holmer, I would guess he was directed to this site by some information seeker who might have mentioned to him in an email that Brown's admission was being intesley discussed here. So, let's fire up the emotional exchanges in hopes that other Universities do the same?

From Northwestern this afternoon:
We have made the first round of admissions to our PhD program with financial aid awards, but thus far we have not declined any applications. We are continuing to evaluate applications for
a few possible admissions later. Also, for some applicants who are not admitted to our PhD program, we will suggest the possibility of being considered for our MS program.
Looks like I got waitlisted.

I applied for Applied Math via ESAM. An important distinction, I gather.

laughed @virgo, same here. my dad assumes that a school's football performance is directly proportional to the quality of their math department T_T. also, have you gotten your financial offer from wisconsin? is it as terribly horrible as i have heard it is? apparently the students qualify for food stamps because of how little their stipend is.

Lol, my mom told me to apply to Princeton (I didn't) because John Nash is there and maybe he'd like my application  . I have not received the details from Wisconsin but that sounds horrible. They did say that they would give me extra money for the first year because my application was "particularly strong". I'm actually leaning towards Rutgers at this point. Their offer is good and the teaching load in general seems low there. Plus, there's a professor I really want to work with.

I seem to recall seeing on grad cafe that someone was interviewed and invited to visit, so it seems that they've already sent out whatever their equivalent of the "first wave" is. I'm not really sure how many people they are making offers to, but I personally didn't receive an invitation to visit so I'm not really holding out hope.

To be fair, some of the questions people ask on this site make them come off as particularly desperate. For example, somebody gets accepted to CMU, and people start asking "how did they contact you? Did they call your personal home phone, or did they ring your doorbell and greet you personally with a box of chocolates and an acceptance letter? Do I need to stay home all day in case they come to my door? Will I get an email if they came to my door but I wasn't there, or will they just move on to the next applicant? If I'm allergic to nuts, can I ask them to bring nut-free chocolate, just in case I get accepted? OMG I think somebody rang my doorbell this morning, do you think it was the graduate director!? Actually, I broke open a fortune cookie last night and the lucky numbers almost matched up with my application number. Is that a good sign? Should I post that on gradcafe?"

I don't mind professors updating us here one bit! If people are concerned about profs identifying them here they shouldn't post their stats here until everything is sent out :) After all, they have access to the site whether they post or not. By posting here profs give us actual concrete information rather than the speculations of fellow applicants.

Alright guys and girls, I think I realize why everyone here is so stressed out. It's because of our use of the word "Rejected". That word conjures up images of people falling down trapdoors to the sad, slow swing of a trombone, or getting rudely turned down when asking someone out. It's quite clear that a word such as "rejection" is going to cause bad feelings and depression. That's why I think it's in everyone's best interest to use more positive, inclusive language and expressions. For example, I would like it if grad schools got back to us like this:

1. We at [Insert Dream School Here] found your statement of purpose very funny and cute. Have you considered a career in comedy writing?

2. Considering your scores and GPA, we did not feel it necessary to review your application. Instead, we have included you as a donor to the math dept. for the generous $100 fee you paid us earlier this year. We will all enjoy our new coffee machine very much.

3. While we did not quite feel that you were a fitting candidate for our PhD program, we have recommended you to the school for a B.A. in mathematics.

4. It's not you. It's us.

5. Let's be friends.

6. One of the grad students accidentally ate your application, which was otherwise quite fine. We hope you understand.

7. Unfortunately, we accepted too many Sagittarius last year, and for the sake of balance could not consider your application.

8. Thanks for making our admissions decisions process that much easier. Best Regards, Prof. X.

I did apply to Columbia APAM. I thought that they had interesting research in PDE and stochastic PDE. From what I remember, they had around two or three research groups in these areas, and several faculty are studying this.
