How to take practice exams?

Post by marco » Sat Aug 18, 2012 5:37 pm

Hello:

I will be taking my subject test in October 30. I was wondering in what order should I take the five practice exams made available by ETS? Should it be in chronological order? How do I know the order in which the tests were released? Also is the level of these exams what I should expect in the real thing?

Many Thanks for your answer.

Did ETS release 5 exams? I was only able to find 4 exams. Anyways, if you look at the exam form (e.g. FORM GR0568), the first two digits following GR indicate the year: 05 => 2005 in this case.

The fifth one I have is the one on the Princeton Review book. Thanks for your answer :)

There are two 'easy' and older ETS practice exams and two 'hard' and more recent ETS practice exams. If you are going to take each of the practice exams once, I would recommend this:

Take one of the hard exams first. These are the closest to what you will actually encounter on test day. If you start off taking the easy ones you might get lulled into a false sense of security. After the first practice test, you can plan which materials you need to study more intensely. I would also recommend taking the other hard one last. As for the order of the Princeton exam and the other two ETS exams I don't think it matters that much.

Actually I would recommend taking from easiest to hardest: GR8368 and GR8768 to "warm up" first and revise topics. Then GR9768 to get a shock at the difficulty, and then really test yourself on GR0568, which is by far the hardest.

This is assuming you have time to do all 4 and revise afterwards. If not, definitely take the hardest two first.

IMHO the Princeton Review test is pretty much useless.
