NYU Math vs UCSD Applied Math Masters

Post by serenity272 » Wed Apr 11, 2012 10:50 pm

Hi guys,

After sweating over the decision for days, I finally decided to seek wise counsel from dear members on this forum. With just 3 more days to make a choice, my final decision is between NYU's Math masters vs UCSD's Applied Math masters (got a few Stats admits but I'm mostly interested in math programs).

To be honest, it seems very difficult to say no to San Diego's nice weather (I've been living in the midwest for like forever), but NYU's higher ranking and name recognition seem to make it a more practical option, especially since I'm planning on working after the program. At this point I don't have any particular field of interest, though applied math/probability are things I would like to possibly explore first. Cost is not too much of a factor since I do have a bit of personal funds, and both options seem to be pretty close after tuition plus living expenses.

Does anyone have any suggestions for my situation? Currently I'm leaning towards NYU, but if anyone could share some experience from either school or any general recommendations that would be greatly appreciated.

You should take a look at this thread:

It includes a detailed experience of someone who graduated from math MS at NYU.
