Fall 2012 Decisions

Post by YNWA2406 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 9:21 pm

Hey all I thought I'd set up a quick and easy way for people to tell where they actually decide to go when they decide. Basically like GradCafe and the Admissions topic, but only for where people have officially chosen to go. Now I haven't yet chosen where to go but I'm sure there are people out there who have or are on the verge of deciding and I thought this would be a good thing to consolidate everyone's final choices.

I have basically decided to go to UCLA at this point. I visited last Friday and had an awesome time and was amazed to not find a single unhappy grad student (though maybe only the happy ones come to the visiting day!). And the professors all seemed very enthusiastic. I'm too nervous to take the final plunge and sign the dotted line just yet, though. Maybe an Escape from LA scenario will play out next week and the entire city will be destroyed. Probably. Definitely.

I took a deep breath and went ahead and accepted the offer from UCLA. Now with spring break next week it is time for maximum relaxation! Good luck to everyone still figuring out where to go!

+1 on UCLA. It's almost unfair, them flying us out to a sunny wonderland in the middle of winter.

The short answer: UIC.

The long one: My decision came down to Purdue versus UGA by April, but then I received a last-minute offer from UIC. Spent some time evaluating and ultimately accepted the UIC offer on 4/11 and declined UGA and Purdue. Purdue responded by offering a one-year fellowship on 4/12 and then a two-year fellowship on 4/13; $20k/year each.

While attempting to process this on 4/13, the tornado sirens go off, the math building loses power, and we all walk down twelve flights of stairs to the basement in the dark. (Fortunately, our math building was built as a fallout shelter.) It ripped up Main Street pretty bad; we even made the Weather Channel!

Image

At this point in the story, there are more tornadoes to come for the rest of the weekend, including those that would ultimately demolish Woodward, OK and Wichita, KS. Evacuate to Dallas; just end up telling Purdue to pass the fellowship on to someone else.

I'm still pretty happy about going to UIC -- their program is a bit closer to my research interests, which is why I picked it in the first place, and I've got a lot of friends in Chicago who I'd already told I was coming. But maybe I can serve as an instructive example to next year's crop that you should always free up the days around 4/15 in case something comes up.
