Undergrad Institution: University of Chicago
Major: Math

GPA: 3.45 Math, 3.65 Overall

Type of Student: Domestic Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (99%)
V: 166 (97%)
W: 4.5 (72%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 740 (71%), good but not excellent

Program Applying: Pure Mathematics (either algebraic geometry or logic)

Research Experience: 3 REUs, two at home institution and one NSF-funded at a state university.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Undergrad institution doesn't give out many. Dean's List every quarter; that's about it.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: ARML in high school; lots of high-level tutoring (e.g. abstract algebra, analysis, etc); worked as a TA for calculus and topology courses.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Two of recommenders are very well known in respective fields; another went to Berkeley (my top choice).

Applying to: (all Math programs):

Reach:
UC --- Berkeley (Rejected: 2/22 by email)
UC --- Los Angeles (Rejected: 2/25 by email to check website)
University of Illinois -- Chicago (PENDING 3/23)
University of Michigan -- Ann Arbor (Rejected, Early March, by form email)

Fit:
Columbia (Rejected: 2/1 by form email)
Brown (Rejected: 2/21 by email)
University of Pennsylvania (Rejected 3/19 by email)
State University of New York -- Stony Brook (Rejected 3/23 by email)

Safety:
Rutgers (Rejected: 3/14, by email)
University of Maryland (ACCEPTANCE 2/21 by email. TA position ($16-18K)+ 2-year fellowship ($5K each year))
Northeastern University (Withdrew application 3/23)

Fellowships:
NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (PENDING 3/23)

Edit 2/11: I'm really starting to sweat it over here. I just wish they'd tell me what will be my fate.
Edit 2/21: I sent an email to all of the programs asking for an estimate of when I can hear back. I received one rejection (so far) as a response.... at least I'm not still waiting on Brown. :|
Edit 3/14: Happy Pi Day! Sent out another email asking when I might hear back; got a quick rejection from Rutgers, which I thought was a safety for me... Oh well.
Edit 3/19: Now that UPenn is out, I'm just waiting on three; Stony Brook said they'd respond this week (by 3/23), and UIC said they'd respond by the end of the month.
Edit 3/23: Now that SUNYSB is out, I'm definitely leaning towards just taking the offer from Maryland. I live in Chicago, so I don't really want to stay here for UIC; and I've heard Northeastern has some pretty bad department organizational problems.... (and they said they'd send out decisions in April! hah!)

First of all, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post here.

@cincodemayo5590:

You are coming from a very good university and have excellent overall stats but still, judging from past years admission stats posted in this website it seems like Stony Brook is very erratic in their acceptances and they denied many people with excellent background etc. Why would you consider this a safety for you? Just wondering. If I were to judge based solely on the admission results posted here for 2010 and 2011, I would have said that Stony Brook is a Reach for everyone...

(Let's keep this as the last post on our little sub-thread; I don't want to clog up the main profiles thread. We can talk more over PM if you'd like.)

I have to admit that my tier-ing of the schools I applied to is loose; I'm using primarily the information that my recommenders (all of whom know the programs they recommended) gave to me. I haven't really researched the admissions stats for the past couple years. However, one of my recommenders said I was nearly a shoo-in for Stony Brook, (and he's a pretty young professor,) so my guess is that that can't be too far from the truth. Either way, these tiers are more or less meaningless after a certain point, and I suppose I've ranked them more based on which programs I want to be a part of.

(I suppose, though, that for other readers, especially those next year, I should change the ranking. I'll do that now.)

Undergrad Institution: Top 50 liberal arts school, not known for math
Major(s): Math and physics
GPA: 3.96 overall, 4.00 math
Type of Student: DWM

Grad Institution: Small state school with just a master's program in math
Concentration: MA in pure math
GPA: 4.00

GRE Revised General Test:

M: 680 (58%)

Program Applying: Pure math

Research Experience: Two summers of negative ion research, resulting in a publication. One summer of knot theory research, culminating in presentations at JMM and MathFest. Master's project on generalizations of Thompson's group.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Two years tutoring experience, and three semesters of teaching precalculus/calculus.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Four semesters of graduate coursework: point-set and algebraic topology, measure theory, K-theory, character theory, etc.

Applying to Where:
U of Michigan - Rejected Mar 9
UC Davis - Waitlisted Mar 28, Withdrew Apr 7
IU Bloomington - Waitlisted Feb 27, Accepted Apr 10 w/ TAship, Declined Apr 13
Ohio State - Accepted Feb 29 w/ TAship, Declined Apr 7

Ohio U - Accepted Mar 14 w/ TAship, Declined Mar 16
U of Cincinnati -Accepted Apr 18 w/o funding , Declined Apr 18
UC Riverside - Accepted Jan 28 w/ fellowship, Declined Apr 7

Overall thoughts: Apply to a wide range of schools. Overreach a little, just for fun, but make sure there are "safety schools" on your list as well. A solid coursework background can make up for weak MGRE scores--but without strong scores you still may find it tough to get into the "elite" programs.

On a lighter note, my advice is that you make a effort to visit every school to which you are admitted and are considering attending (most schools will cover your travel costs). I made visits to Riverside, Iowa, Notre Dame, Purdue, IU, and OSU. I was able to sit in on classes, chat with potential advisors, and, most importantly, talk frankly with grad students in the trenches at these programs. The trips had a big influence on my final decision--you really can't tell how you feel about living/working some place from just scouring a website. You gotta venture out and get your hands a bit dirty.

Best of luck to everyone who applies next year!

What I learned: If you have a low stat (see above), DO take some space in your personal statement to explain it in a professional manner. (e.g., "I had to work to pay my way through..." etc.) Your research interests and background are paramount, of course. Make sure you "fit" into the general direction of the program. Email people and ask what is hip and rising. Websites often lag from the current direction the program is taking. Find an "in" and make sure you are a familiar face or name.

Also, don't assume reviewers see the obvious; there are too many applications. For example, I got a C in Adv Cal 1 (baby Rudin) and then As in Ad Cal 2 (baby Rudin) and the grad Real Analysis 1 (Royden). Obviously I picked up the Ad Cal. Tie that together for the reviewers in your letter. Otherwise they might not get past that C.

Good luck, future generations!

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA in Bilkent
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Well, 8 grad classes (1 in undergrad 7 in MSc). Got one reccomendation from a professor in England that I met in Nesin Mathematics Village
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I finished undergrad studies in 6 years. Even though my undergrad math gpa is good (I guess), my transcript is riddled with failed courses which I repeated and got A, C.Eng transcript is even worse and looks funny. I don't have that problem in MSc. transcript.

Applying to Where:
Cornell - Rejected on 03/20
UW Madison - Rejected on 04/18
Minnesota Twin Cities - Admitted on 02/24 - Accepted offer on 04/10
Rutgers - Rejected on 03/16
UCSD - Rejected on 02/28
U Pittsburgh - Rejected on 04/27
Waterloo - Admitted on 02/23 - Declined offer on 03/27

Comment on 02/28 : I feel like my chances of acceptance for the remaining schools other than Pittsburgh are not high. At least that's what I'm trying to prepare myself for.
03/15 : The graduate program director in Rutgers says that the review of applications is complete and initial offers have been made. There are 12-14 openings and 350+ applications.
03/27 : I was shocked when I saw Waterloo's $34k/year offer. Then I realized that the tuiton fee is not waived, heh.
04/18 : Finally a rejection from UW Madison. So I have survived 4 rounds of rejections without ever getting wait-listed.
04/27 : Weird, overall.

I think this site needs a cautionary statement from someone who has gone through dozens of cycles of graduate student admissions. This kind of site is best for undergraduate admissions. For college admissions thousands of applications are reduced to dozens on the basis of objective criteria-scores, grades, etc. That is not the case for graduate school (although it is for professional schools like law). Graduate admissions is a very individualized process. Given that everything else is identical, it is better to have a higher GPA and scores than a lower one but it is all those other factors that are far more important. In the US, graduate programs accept very few applicants. Those accepted will be working very closely with mentors. So, match (fit) is the most critical variable for most programs. To what extent is the research that you did as an undergrad (or elsewhere) match what you would be doing if accepted? Does your undergrad mentor communicate with your prospective grad mentor either via the journals or phone? Do you have technique or experience that relates or adds to your hoped for graduate slot? Does your statement identify you as the candidate that is the best match for the slot open? You can have tops grades, scores and experience but if you are interested in Topic A (within a field) but the mentor for Topic A is filled but the mentor for Topic B is recruiting, you are out of luck at that university. This is not meant to discourage anyone but it is no longer a numbers game. That is why you may see people with outstanding credentials rejected from less than top notch universities. Fit trumps objective credentials. On top of all that, even if you were hoping for Topic B, if the mentor losses funding, you may be out of luck. That is why applicants should focus on a fit between what you want to do (and have some experience with) and the slot you are applying for. Forget the rubrics about grades and scores. Above a minimal level (presumably reached by most applicants), they are irrelevant.

I doubt many people here are under any delusions about having guaranteed spots for graduate school; however trends ARE trends.

Besides, aside from the flurry of application activity at this time, the main purpose of the site is to gain insight/swap stories about the subject GRE.

Most people here seem to be in pure math, where there's never any "funding" to begin with.

While I agree it would be quite helpful if people indicated the exact areas they wanted to work in, rather than just saying "applying for pure math" or "applying for math," I would have appreciated any information at all about applying to grad school given my particular situation (low undergrad GPA), and couldn't find much, so I'm here to make sure there's at least one more data point out there for the next crop of students.

Many of the schools I'm applying to are costing me upwards of $100 between the application fee, paying the ETS to send my scores, and overnighting transcripts and so forth. The information that, say, a particular school's graduate college is putting pressure on its departments to boost its GRE averages could be worth a significant chunk of a TA's monthly salary.

As an act of kindness to the rest of us, if you've received acceptances from multiple schools, could you please decline the offers of schools you've decided not to attend? It'll speed up the process of allowing more acceptances to be sent out-----so that some of us will be released from purgatory earlier.

We all would really appreciate it----thank you!

UNLV - Math with stat focus MA / Admitted on 2/19 with $10K TA / Declined on 3/7

Pretty much best case scenario. Going to my dream school. Couldn't be happier :)

FINAL THOUGHTS: After all is said and done I'm ecstatic to be going to Stanford. It has been my dream school since I was about 8. I did not do that well with the PhD programs but did very well with Master's. If I could do it all over again the only things I would change is I would have had at least one semester or summer spent doing research instead of at an internship and I would have taken the Math GRE this past summer even though it was only "highly recommended" for one school (BU) and required for none. Other than that I'm very happy with the results! Good luck to everyone else applying for this upcoming year!

Undergrad/Grad Institution: German University
Degree: German Diplom (German 5 year degree, considered equivalent to a Masters in Germany)
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Theoretical Physics
GPA: 1.0 (best possible GPA, they have a different grade scale in Germany)
Type of Student: International Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 96%
V: 86% Ouch!
W: 3.5
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 500 (14%) Didn't prepare at all because I was busy wrapping up my thesis. Hadn't done calculus, elementary combinatorics or probability in a few years.

TOEFL Score: 110 = R30/L27/S26/W27

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: None, but I submitted a thesis in algebraic geometry for my degree.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions:
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TAed several courses. Attended two summer schools, one at the Newton Institute, Cambridge, UK.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Had taken lots of algebraic geometry classes. Also had done self-study on topics like complex geometry, differential geometry of fibre bundles, differential forms in algebraic topology etc. I had strong recommendations, I think, especially from my thesis advisor who has known me well for a long time. My application was relatively focused on my areas of interest: Geometry, topology and their relations to physics.

Any Other Info That Showed Up On My App and Might Matter:

Applying to Where: All pure math
Columbia - Rejected on 2/2 Expected.
UPenn - Rejected on 3/20 upon email inquiry Expected. Was asked what my MGRE score was when I visited, was told it was too low.
Northwestern - Waitlisted on 1/23. Rejected on 4/4 Top realistic choice.
SUNY Stony Brook - Admitted on 2/29 / Declined
UT Austin - Waitlisted on 2/11. Admitted on 3/23 ATTENDING
U British Columbia - Rejected on 3/21 upon inquiry Humph, I thought my chances were good.
UIUC - Waitlisted on ???. Rejected on 4/12 Apparently their rate of acceptances was unusually high. I was never informed that I was on the waitlist and they didn't reply to my emails inquiring about my application status.

The moral of the story is that MGRE scores are not all important.

It was very hard deciding between Stony Brook and UT Austin. Overall, I am happy with the results, though I would really have liked to go to Northwestern. I would like to think that, if my MGRE had been better, maybe I would have been made a first round offer instead of being waitlisted. Oh, well.

Hope this helps someone out there...

Undergrad Institution: An "Institute of Technology" (not Massachusetts or California)
Major(s): Physics, Applied Math
Minor(s): Psychology
GPA: 3.95
Type of Student: Domestic Asian Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (98%)
V: 166 (97%)
W: 4.5 (72%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 720 (67%) Haha...yeah...

Program Applying: Applied Math

Research Experience: just 1 semester of physics research (atomic physics/optics, hated it)
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: a few scholarships, the usual stuff
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: 6 semesters intro physics lab TA, 1 semester math TA, grader for 3 semesters
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: 4 grad math classes?
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: withdrew from an engineering class freshman year (back when I didn't know what to major in)

Applying to Where:
Carnegie Mellon University Mathematical Sciences - RJ 4/4 by e-mail
University of Maryland AMSC - Admit 2/22 by phone (even though I was too lazy to answer the additional questions)
University of Washington Applied Math - Admit 2/3 by e-mail
University of Pennsylvania AMCS - RJ 3/7 by e-mail
Brown University DAM - Admit 2/3 by e-mail
University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) Mathematics - Admit 2/21 by e-mail
Cornell University CAM - Waitlist 3/8 by e-mail, Admit 3/9 by e-mail
University of Texas (Austin) ICES - Admit 2/13 by e-mail
Northwestern University ESAM - Admit 1/30 by phone
Duke University Applied Mathematics - Admit 3/9 by e-mail

What I learned:
Cast a wide net and hope for the best. Coursework seemed to offset my mediocre GRE, but then again, I applied to applied math programs.

I felt a bit dubious about having all this information available while I was still applying, but now that I've accepted, here it is!

Undergrad Institution: One of the top universities in Australia
Major(s): Pure Mathematics, Physics, Finance
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: Doesn't translate well to a 4 point scale. Would be in the top few in my year, probably not the top.

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (99%)
V: 170 (99%)
W: 6.0 (99%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 900 (97%)

Program Applying: PhDs in pure mathematics.

Research Experience: Two undergraduate theses, some 6-week holiday projects, a poster at two conferences.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Some scholarships and prizes for occasionally coming top in the year in various things.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutoring (equivalent to TA) first year physics and maths classes for an hour or two a week for two years.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
- Involvement in various International Mathematics Olympiad programs, as a student and teacher.
- Honours years in mathematics and physics. An honours year is a year after your Bachelor's degree which is half coursework (roughly equivalent to late undergrad or early grad courses in the US, I believe) and half research project (culminating in a thesis).

Applying to Where: All are PhDs in mathematics. All acceptances are with funding, unless noted.
Stanford - Admitted on Feb 14 - Will attend!
Chicago - Admitted on Jan 12 - Declined
Princeton - Admitted on Jan 18 - Declined
Michigan - Admitted on Feb 16 - Declined
Columbia - Waitlisted on Feb 2 - Withdrew
Harvard - Rejected by letter dated Feb 1
MIT - Rejected on Feb 23
Berkeley - Rejected on Mar 27
Rutgers - Rejected on May 18.

Cambridge - Rejected on Feb 2 (and invited to apply for part III)
Oxford - Admitted by letter dated Mar 7. Funding is not tied to admission in the UK, and I was only offered a small scholarship ($12k)

Undergrad Institution: Binghamton (medium-large public)
Undergrad Institution: CUNY City College (weird public)

Major(s): Business
Minor(s): Chinese
Masters: Pure Math - generalist, no thesis option
GPA: 3.9 for BS
GPA: 3.5 for MA
Type of Student: Domestic white male

GRE (pre-2012):
Q: 770 (86%)
V: 790 (99%)
W: 4.0 (??%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: ??? (41%) and didn't send them

TOEFL Score: Native English

Program Applying: Applied Math/Statistics

Research Experience: Statistical research assistant in a neuroscience lab on campus. I worked on spike sorting, filtering and inter-neuron correlations. No publications.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: 1st in major as an undergrad
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Taught a remedial algebra class during my MA program
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Prior to my MA, I only took AP calculus, and online calculus II course from some community college, and linear algebra as pass/fail. My quick progress might be worth something - or it might just be a weak foundation.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I worked on Wall Street for 3 years doing research and risk assessment for mortgage-backed bonds. Lots of people (myself included) were in waaaay over their heads with no mathematical training. My personal statement provides immediate motivation for what is otherwise a crazy leap-of-faith career change.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

Applied Math:
Rice - Rejected
Texas - Austin - Rejected
Stony Brook - Diverted to MS program (may be analogous to admission without funding)
Johns Hopkins - Rejected
Colorado - Boulder - Rejected
Maryland - Rejected

Stats:
Minnesota - Rejected
Washington - Seattle - Rejected
Rutgers - Rejected
Rice - Rejected
Ohio State - No response
Connecticut - Accepted with 5yr TA support; attending

I can only conclude that a good "story" doesn't count for much in the application process. No one wants to take a chance with funding. Letters, grades and projects are what matter and, in general, foreign students are better prepared. I think my results say a lot about the advising and administrative support in my department.

But I still get paid to study. AWESOME.
