Berkeley's Personal Statement

Post by dasgut » Sun Nov 13, 2011 3:03 pm

I'm a DWM and I have absolutely no idea what to write for the personal statement. It seems geared toward minorities. What do I write? What do I do with this?

Anything you want? If you do not consider yourself a minority or disadvantaged or an active advocate for people from these backgrounds, you are not going to qualify for diversity fellowships or special consideration by the Mathematics Opportunity Committee. I don't think the diversity statement matters for anything else. I know someone at Berkeley who wrote a single sentence along the lines of, "I am a white male from a middle-class background." Didn't seem to hurt him.

Owlpride,
Thanks for your answers on both threads I posted today. You were a big help! :) BTW how do you like Stanford?

Stanford is AWESOME. I have never been happier! The sheer amount of math around me is a bit overwhelming, but it's so inspiring to be surrounded by people who are at the top of their game all day long. And the campus is just gorgeous. I keep having to remind myself that I am not actually on vacation...
