I got accepted to PCMI early this morning, so it sounds like those acceptances are on their way! I'm excited but also hoping to hear back from a few other programs. Good luck to everyone!

Not sure if this happened to anyone else, but I was accepted to the apprentice program at UChicago, but apparently I was actually admitted to the full program? I just received the incorrect email for whatever reason. :?

Does anyone here have experience with the Summer@ICERM REU? If so, could you share a little bit about your thoughts? I just got an offer today and am super excited! But I’m currently trying to evaluate whether I should renege a tech internship offer for the program. I want to go to grad school for math at some point, and I’m not sure which path I should take for this summer (internship or research).

I was just offered a spot on the wait list for PCMI. I really wanted to go. Does someone know what the odds of getting off the wait list tend to be, or is it just a polite rejection?

Yeah I got an email saying I would get a call to talk about giving me an offer in LA (I applied for both LA and Singapore). It said "congrats on making it this far", and then I was offered a spot during the call

A note on this: there seems to have been some issues with UChicago emails for several applicants, so if something seems off I would def email Peter! Hopefully it’s been resolved in full by now but just as an FYI

I actually posted my comment after emailing him about it! I emailed him to ask a question and mentioned that I was in the apprentice program, and he responded saying that I was actually admitted to the full program. I then got an official email saying I was admitted to the full program. So everything is resolved now. Thanks though!

Hi -- new to this thread and to REUs. Would you all say that in general, if I have not heard back from an REU by now, I probably have not gotten in? Thank you...

Certainly not. Different schools have different response times, don’t be discouraged. Some students may decline offers, or some schools may find more funding, so if you haven’t been accepted yet don’t get discouraged. There are many factors that go into an REU acceptance.

That said, they are highly competitive, but don’t lose hope quite yet.

Do you all think that in general, math REUs tend to only contact those they accept? So if I am not accepted, I should expect just to not hear anything? Thanks again...

Most schools in general are like this. Some schools are nice enough to send formal rejections or let you know if you made the waitlist.

Has anyone here heard back from UCLA's Applied Math REU (NOT RIPS; the one actually at the school), Texas A&M, or the Brown Applied Math REU (so the zebrafish one, not ICERM)? The deadline for all of these programs was on Feb. 15th, so I'd expect to hear something from them now, had I been accepted :/

Thank you! But nope, they didn't. They haven't released the sponsors for this year yet although they did say several from last year (which are listed on their website) are returning, with a couple new ones as well. They said they'd send out more info about the projects later on (once you're accepted), and you can let them know which ones your interested in then

I'm still trying to decide. I've been told that it's a great program from those who are familiar with the program. I'm leaning towards some other programs slightly, but it's hard to make a decision and turn anything down. But the deadline is Monday 3/4, so I'll have to decide by then. Hopefully if I decline that'll help your chances if you're still waiting to hear from them!

Unfortunately I can only speak for the SpeGra group, but they might have sent acceptances for all of their research groups for this summer.

Hi everybody, new here. I applied to REU for Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. I went for a few SURF programs too. Acceptances are supposed to start today, did anyone else apply/have you heard from these programs? Did anyone else try SURF?

I actually just heard back from Cornell today (a little bit after noon) for their REU project (so, not the SPUR ones) for dynamics, control theory, and robotics, and I got in! I am very excited to take part in this and so grateful (I will very likely take it) :) I have not heard back from CMU yet.

EDIT: Actually, I heard back from UCLA on the same day a few hours after, so I am not sure which I will take now.

I was offered a spot at my home university (University of Texas at Tyler), but the deadline to accept is Friday and I'm unsure how long I should wait to hear back from the others that I applied at as those projects are applied mathematics focused vs. algebra. :? Either way, I am completely ecstatic because I thought my chances were zero since I'm a freshman! :D

Has anyone else heard from anywhere else not already mentioned here? I applied to a hefty 18 programs and have been accepted to one, but haven't heard back from anywhere else. I need to accept or reject my offer by the end of this week, and I was hoping I'd hear back from someone else before then. Anyone have any info?

I do not see myself as a particularly strong candidate, though I am a little disheartened by a 1/18 record lol. I do know these programs are competitive, I guess I just didn't realize how competitive they really are! I'm assuming I have been rejected by the majority of my list, though a few on my list didn't even have applications due until Feb 28 or March 1, which is very concerning to me with my current decision deadline of March 8.

That being said, I am extremely grateful to have been accepted to one and would be more than happy to attend, just looking to see what my other options are, if any at all lol

The UCLA Applied Math REU also sent out at least some acceptances on Friday.

Also, I am pretty sure that some REUs are still not done with acceptances yet, even those with mid-February deadlines, so just sit tight until Friday! In previous years, I've heard of some acceptances being released in mid-March.

Is this one program you were admitted to one which you even remotely want to do? If so, I would take it. I'm sure that any REU would be a wonderful experience, even if it wasn't initially your top choice. Maybe, you might even discover something new that you enjoy.

I will definitely be accepting the offer if I don't hear from anyone else! Any offer is a great opportunity that I'd love to take advantage of. It would just be preferable to hear back from a few more before then, but unfortunately, I guess this is just the way some things go!

Yeah, of course, and that's the right attitude to have. :D lol anyways, I hope that everything goes well, regardless of whether or not you end up taking this offer! Congratulations to you as well.

Hello all, it's probably very late to be asking this, but I'm currently trying to decide between attending UCSB's REU or the PCMI USS. I think some schools are still sending out acceptances, so I was wondering if you think it'd be worth waiting for responses from other REU sites with the plan to default to PCMI if I don't receive any other acceptances. If I were to attend PCMI's summer program I would be able to continue working on my research project at my home institution, though I doubt it would be as productive as an REU. Which do you think would help my grad school prospects more, PCMI or the UCSB REU? I have until tomorrow morning to accept UCSB, and until March 22nd to accept PCMI.

Thank you very much for all your help, I really have no idea what to do.

One thing I'm thinking a lot about is getting letters of recommendation! I'm leaning towards a more standard REU and away from PCMI because I really feel like I need to prioritize getting another letter from someone who has worked on me with research. That said, you may be in a different position because it sounds like you already have an established relationship with someone who knows your research capabilities! And PCMI seems like an excellent opportunity for networking and learning about lots of different kinds of grad schools, if that's what you feel like will be most helpful in your grad school search. (Disclaimer: I'm an undergrad and don't have any ideas what grad schools would care about XD )

Hey everyone! Has anyone who applied for the Data Science project heard from Iowa State? What about the MBI REU through Ohio State? Currently dying of anticipation over here.
