October 24's Subject Test

Post by FrederickQin » Sat Oct 24, 2015 9:32 pm

Hi, everyone! How do you feel about the GRE Subject Test in Math of today?
I got 85%(830/990) last month but while I was doing the test, I think I cannot even get 80% this time so I cancel my score. I find it's much harder than September's test. Though my goal is 90%, I think all I can do now is just sending my first score. What a terrible test!

I know I answered 57, so far I can think of 2 that are absolutely wrong (probable worst case scenario is 50 right). There were some parts I was unsure about, but the first half of the test seemed pretty straightforward. This is my first time taking the test, so I really don't know what to expect in terms of scoring. But for some reason, I felt the test better than two of the old released examinations. What do you think scores might be in terms of distribution? Also, I know it is naive, but should I pay more attention to the percentile or the scaled score?

I had a fever yesterday morning when I was taking the test :(. I left 7 questions and made 7 silly mistakes, hope I would get a 800+ :(. Last time I scored 760 (73%). I'm wondering Is 73% enough for schools like Texas A&M ? :(

I know someone who got in there with more or less the same score about 5 years ago.

I hardly practiced much because I am a working professional and found that the test really required lots of practice and tricks to solve questions quickly. I only managed to attempt about 41 questions. I am targeting universities around California and Western Canada and applying for PhD in Applied Mathematics. I have 3 conference and 1 journal papers during my masters. I am yet to take my general GRE.

Suggestions on which schools are within reach with this performance?

I had like one month to prepare and I spent all the time studying Topology from Munkres and Algebra from Herstein since I knew nothing about these subjects.
Bad Bad idea lol. I ended up taking none of the practice test, didnt read the PR review. Woefully unprepared for the pacing and the type of questions in the test. I also have no idea if this test is hard compared to the norm of MGRE

You can check the percentile here: https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_guide_table2.pdf
Of course, you should pay more attention to scaled score.

I took last month's test and yesterday's test. The version I took yesterday was a lot harder than anything from 0568, 1268, and last month's test. All the prep material was useless. What a horrible test!

I used 1268, 0568, PR, REA, stewart's calculus, and various other standard texts for review, but all the specific test prep material was minimally helpful.

I took the test in october 2012, and my score was 860, 91 percentile. I took this test too, and I think it was much harder, in 2012 test, I managed to solve about 60, got many of them wrong, as I do always. But in saturday test I only answered 52, and I think at least 8 of them will be wrong, so my raw score would be 42, which it doesn't matter anymore because I canceled my score.

Somehow I found the test easier than September's. I took the test in New York so maybe it's different exams formats...

Do the test questions remain same at all test centers throughout the world?

Will the scaled score-percentile combination for this test be different from previous ones since it was harder?

I think that often, people in the same room get completely different tests. I remember hearing some people talking about what kind of stuff showed up on their test, and realizing it was quite different than what was on my own test, but often similar to a different test I had taken. So, I don't think the experience is the same for everyone, even for the same administration.

I don't think test takers at the same place have different version of tests. My friend and I took this test 2 times, in each time, our test are exactly the same. Btw, I guess the raw score for 800 is about 41, this test is a bit harder than the September's test

What makes you believe that a raw score of 41 would equate to 800? Btw, does anyone have a link to a site that mentions the different forms to the math subject test and what they equate to?

In the september test, I left 18 questions and got at least 2 wrong. Based on my performance with the trial test, I know that there are other 6-7 wrong answers, so the raw score is around 38, I got 760

You may have gotten less wrong than you thought. From the 2012 test, 760 corresponds to a raw score of 43. You may have gotten a raw score in the low 40s.

I got 770 (in April). My guess is a raw score of around 44.

I got 750 ;_;
Cant really blame anyone but myself really. I had terrible preparation. Only one month, and I spent those time studying algebra and topology...which doesn't matter in the test anyway.

I got a 780(76%). I'm domestic, does this eliminate top 5 schools if the rest of my application is strong?

For fee payment and financial aid purposes, you count as "domestic" only if you are a US citizen, national, permanent resident or (in most cases) refugee. I am sure some universities may consider you "domestic" for admission purposes, since you are currently attending a US university.

I answered 63/66 and I did no more than 3 guessing questions. As a result, I now have 730/67%.
1. Don't understand how this happened.
2. Do I have any chance to be admitted if I am international?

I got 700 (60%). My general GRE score is Q:170, V:153. I am thinking of applying to the following places (PhD in Applied Math). I've noticed the same trend but I wouldn't worry too much provided that the rest of your applicant profile is strong. My score was also 660 51% but I'm not terribly worried. General GRE scores are 170Q 157V and 6.0AW. The subject test doesn't measure your ability to study in a top doctoral program. It measures how much you remember from your undergraduate program or how much you prepped with outside materials

My BA is in mathematics from a pretty well known liberal arts school (graduated in 2008 with 3.74 GPA) and my MS in mathematics and statistics is from a top 25 school (private univeristy in DC - graduated 2010 with 3.81 GPA in concentration). I'm applying to several top 15 programs in applied mathematics and computer science and am happy with my overall chances. I've spent the last 6 years teaching high school mathematics at an IB world school and did adjunct work as a stats professor. I haven't encountered several of the topics on the exam in over 8 years so to score 660 to round out my application should be fine. Work on your SOP and get some good letters.

As one of my advisors once told me, good doctoral programs want to know that you are willing to learn and be challenged. Provided that you have a good background, they'll teach you what needs to be taught.

The Canadian schools don't even require GRE scores. Whether or not you are overshooting depends on the rest of your application.

Why does 40 raw score result in 800 in Sep. but 40 result in 600 in Oct? I think Oct test much harder than the Sep. one. Does anyone else think it the same way?

From comments above. I believe more competitive mathematicians chose to take the exam in Oct and that's why.

Does anyone know what the top score was? I can't figure out whether it is out of 910 or 920. Does a top scaled score correspond to a perfect score on the exam, or can you miss a couple and still get the maximum scaled score?
