Rents near Boston Univeristy

Post by algebraicallyminded » Sun Mar 01, 2015 9:06 pm

Hi guys. Do any of you know what are rates of rent near Boston University? BU provides 30k/yr stipend, but I heard that Boston is such a pricey place to live in. Do you think this amount will give a comfortable life there?

You might try checking out the Boston Craigslist to gauge rents near the university.

Bear in mind that you don't really need to live right on campus; the transit is quite good in that area (and the rent is pretty high, I think). Allston is close and (relatively) cheap, but my impression is that a lot of the housing stock is pretty student-y and loud. The BU guy I know actually lives out in Lechmere and comes in on the green line train every day (half an hour or so).

Also I lived in Boston for the past ten year, by Northeastern and then in Somerville, and commuted to BU via the T. Red line to green line took about an hour tops, but it really was never a problem (although I'm glad I'm not living there this year with all that snow)!

If youre close to a college, rent can be outrageous. A one-bedroom can easily go for 1500-2000 a month. It's absurd. Looking farther out like the others have said is a good bet. I was really lucky to find a place in Somerville, a 3 bedroom for 2300, so I paid 750 a month, and that wasnt bad.

Good luck!

bernface: yes. The offer came out at the end of February. I am debating between BU and one other school in my final decision.

padmapper dot com is a great tool for finding housing. Although after checking, I've confirmed that housing around BU is expensive. :)

There are plenty of good deals out there if you're willing to commute. Actually, my girlfriend lives in Brookline, a walkable (20 or 30 minutes) distance from BU, she pays somewhere between 500 and 600 a month and has a very comfortable apartment. I would suggest that you spend a good amount of time on Craigslist. Enticing offers like these will come up occasionally.
