Anyone else get their April score today?

Post by Zetetic » Fri May 25, 2012 7:12 pm

I received my score in the mail but I can't see it online. It's strange because the ETS has the approximate shipping date set at June 1, so I'm wondering if anyone else has received their score already.

I got mine in the mail.

I am a bit confused about the scoring. Based on the scoring at the back of the practice test, I thought 890 was the highest scaled score, but in the letter it sounded like the score was out of 990. I realize the percentile is what matters most, but I really would like to understand the scaled score better.

Check page 22 of http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_guide.pdf

The scale does change from year to year. Usually, the highest possible score is a 910 or 920. I think the score is actually supposed to be the fixed measurement, in the sense that if your group of test takers happens to do better than average your percentile might suffer but your score does not. I know that my score would have been about 10 percentile points higher five years ago, at least xP

Just got my score today, and not as good as expected either=((

scaled score: 680
%below: 58 (this may kill my applications for grad school)

While I'm thinking about re-taking the test in October, does anyone know if I have any shots with this score at schools like Georgia Tech ACO program, CMU ACO program(Business department),WSU Applied Math program and Boston PHD Financial Math program, provided that all other components of my application are quite strong (e.g: 2 publications on not so well-known journals)?

Scaled score: 690
% Below: 61

Not at all what I was hoping for, though that seems to be the reaction of many.

Does anyone know if there are people teaching MGRE over the internet, eg through Skype?

Can anyone please give me an opinion to this question? It's really important to me:)

Two of those programs aren't through the math department (CMU business and Boston). Can you show me the pages that say whether they require the Math subject test at all? WSU applied math doesn't even require the general test scores (though they encourage them):

"GRE test scores are not required by the Department of Mathematics. However, we encourage applicants to submit scores for the GRE General Test and the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics. These scores must be no older than 5 years at the time of application. Please request the Educational Testing Service to submit GRE scores directly to code 4705."

The only program I would be worried about is Georgia tech. Maybe CMU. I can tell you that Penn state posts their yearly average score: http://www.math.psu.edu/grad/phd/faq.php

I think that Penn state may be more competitive than CMU, and since they post their scores that is some evidence that they take them quite seriously and that might cause some inflation relative to similarly competitive programs, but it's weak evidence at best.
