Math Subject GRE "cutoff" for international students

Post by yoyostein » Wed Apr 25, 2012 3:02 am

Hi,
Regarding the rumors that international students need to get over 90% in MGRE to get admitted, is it true in general?

Is 80+% sufficient for international students (with good English, TOEFL, GRE Verbal and Writing) to get admitted?

Thanks for your opinion!

It is definitely not true. I am an international student and I got admission to Top20 univeristies with a GRE-Math score of 80%. If you are aiming higher though, maybe it would be better for you to have 85%+.

From my experience this year (with applications), universities want you to have also a very good TOEFL score, since they are going to offer you a TA position. Keep in mind though that the most important factor is strong LoRs.

To add a data point, I've always heard that where you come from is the big factor in int. admissions. I.e. if a school has accepted a student from your university before and they have performed well, they want more from the same school. Everything else except mgre is hard to judge..
