I personally haven't heard anything. I'm also going for algebraic geometry, and my recommenders (one of whom is a geometer) didn't say anything about UMass; but really all that means is (1) that they're not in the top twenty, and (2) my recommenders personally didn't know anything about their program.
If you're concerned about your prospects, there's really no reason (aside from the extra bit of work, asking for another letter from your recommenders, and the application fee) not to apply there as well. You can always just decline an offer if you get into a more preferred program. You've got to move quickly, though, given the deadline.
If I may ask, where else have you applied, and what is your applicant profile like? (You could put up your profile here: http://www.mathematicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=685
