Institution: Michigan State
Program: Applied Math Phd
Decision: Rejected
Notification date: March 6th 2012
Notified through: e-mailed them inquiring about status. they responded with rejection.

Comments: I was off to a good start, but four straight rejections kinda stings a little.

Institution: University of South Carolina

Comments: The e-mail actually just said I wouldn't be offered funding, not rejected (but to me and most, the two are eqivalent).

Institution: University of Michigan at Ann Arbor
Program: PhD in mathematics
Decision: Email saying they were reviewing my application, and asking whether I was still interested.
Notification date: March 9th 2012
Notified through: Email
Posted on GF: Yes
Comments: The email included "given the strength of your application, I would not be surprised to learn that you have already been admitted to some of the best graduate programs," then mentioned the strength of Michigan's number theory group (I'd specified that was one of the reasons I was applying in my statement of purpose). So unexpectedly an extremely flattering correspondence. Michigan was always a back-up though, and I actually never really completed my application; two of my letter of recommendation writers forgot to send their letters (well, one of the two finally sent it in, but a month late), but I didn't hassle them about it because I'd already been accepted to Princeton. Really, I should've contacted Michigan a long time ago to withdraw my application, which I've now done.

Comments: I was really hoping to get in here. Unfortunately, the e-mail said they likely won't be able to make any more funding offers until after 4/15, but they will notify me if this changes before. Obviously, this raises a BIG dilemma having already received offers with funding :( . So if you got in here and don't plan on attending, please decline at your earliest convenience! :)

Anybody waiting to hear from AMS @ Stony Brook should hear from them soon (at least admits).

Proves you can get in to great places with the most awful GRE math subject test scores. Suck it, ETS! Now I'll have a hard time deciding where to go. There are to many factors to weigh.

Yeah, I think it's pretty shitty when they do that. It's not like we spent hours and bundles of money to even be considered!

I've seen your posts on this forum, and was just curious what schools you applied to. Wouldn't you say your choices are a bit "Top Heavy"?

I think his profile matches the schools he applied to. But I'm curious too, what happened Dasgut?

He thought potentially a meh LOR? viewtopic.php?f=1&t=802

I too am curious to hear the autopsy results if dasgut is comfortable sharing what he thinks happened. Between his performance in the pure math master's program and great subject GRE score, I would have expected more nibbles, even though there were no safety schools in the mix.

Dasgut, if you know one of your references very well, why don't you have him or her contact one of the graduate directors on your behalf to see what went wrong? I also think you have a strong profile and its extremely strange that you did not get in anywhere this year.
