Undergraduate Self-research / Online collaboration

Hi,
At my university, unfortunately there are few prospects for undergraduate research in math. I think the professors don't get any incentive to supervise undergraduates in research..
Is there any way or avenue for an undergraduate to go about researching on his/her own, or online collaboration with someone else? The goal is not some PhD thesis or ground-breaking research, but rather a modest work that is original and perhaps publishable.
Research in math seems to be considerably harder than other fields. For example, in other sciences, doing some sort of experiment (growing a bean/culturing yeast) and writing a report on it seems to count as legitimate research.
Please share with us, if you have any experience researching on your own/ online collaboration with another.
