Undergrad Institution: Kind of small public university
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 3.4 ish
Type of Student: Domestic Female

GRE General Test:
Q: 162 (87%)
V: 163 (93%)
W: 4.0 (48%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Let's not talk about it. It was incredibly bad.

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: Did some stuff in physics, but I don't think it will really count.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Various math department scholarships, leadership scholarships, money from the Honors Program at my school.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I've been working as a math tutor since sophomore year and I've run the math club for a couple of years.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm going to have some damn good letters of rec.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Was, until recently, a physics major, which is why my GPA is so low. I've consistently gotten A's in my math classes.

Someone here has to get information for the non-outstanding of us.

Applying at:
Rice University-pending(due 2-1)
University of Arizona-pending(due 1-15)
Colorado State-pending(due 2-1)
University of Oregon-pending(due 1-15)
Oregon State-pending(due 1-15)
University of New Mexico-pending(due 2-15)
New Mexico State-pending(due 2-1)

lol, rejected pretty much everywhere. That's what I get I suppose. I was basically a year behind because I switched from physics to math, and I had only had a semester of analysis and a semester of algebra when I applied. I'll be taking a 5th year and trying again with some grad classes and research under my belt. See you all next year. :)

Undergrad Institution: Large public university
Major(s): Chemistry, Mathematics
GPA: 4.0 for the time being; may dip slightly after this semester
Type of Student: Domestic white male

GRE:
Q: 167 (95%). Was actually a little surprised I missed anything at all.
V: 163 (93%)
W: 4.0 (48%) :(
M: 700 (63%) :/

Program Applying: Applied Mathematics

Research experience: One numerically focused project that I started in July of last year, though it didn't really get going until fall of last year. The paper for this project is in a draft stage at present; my mentors and I are intending to submit it to the SIAM journal on applied dynamical systems. If we had decided to submit it to an undergrad journal it would probably already be submitted.

Awards: Half ride in undergrad, Dean's List throughout, some awards inside my departments
Miscellaneous: Don't think I have much here.

Applying to where:
University of Maryland College Park
University of Minnesota Twin Cities
Princeton University (rejected 2/14)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (accepted 2/15)
Boston University
University of Delaware (accepted 3/1, $17,500 first year fellowship 3/2)

Undergraduate Institution: Large public university
Major: Mathematics, Minor: Physics
GPA: 3.75 overall, 3.99 in major
Type of Student: Domestic white male

GRE:
Q: 164 (91%) (Unsure of what this is on old scale)
V: 157 (77%) (Ditto)
W: 4.5 (72%)
M: 710 (65%) - Feels bad, man

Program Applying: Applied Math

Research Experience: 3 years research in quantum mechanics and signal processing. Currently writing a paper on which I am first author, still ongoing. I'm constantly adding new material to further solidify the theory but the paper is nearing completion. To be published in a time-frequency analysis journal. One or two papers will be following it, assuming it is accepted.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, not accepting financial award.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Ran a workshop for university physics (E&M section), was secretary of SPS chapter
Any Miscellaneous Points That Might Help: Took a graduate course in scattering theory and a graduate course in complex analysis. As in both courses.

Applying to Where:
University of Texas at Austin - Rejected via email April 27th
Brown Rejected via email February 7th
Cornell Rejected via email March 8th
Stony Brook Rejected via email March 23rd
University of Waterloo Accepted March 12th with 32.5k for the first year!, Attending

Waterloo was my top choice by far and I'm very surprised that I got in. As for why I didn't get into the others, I'm not so sure. My future advisor does quantum information and quantum gravity research and I'm very excited to work for him. Because Waterloo is outside the US, I will not be able to accept the financial award that goes with the NSF. I have to say that I was a bit shocked that I was flat-out rejected by the other schools. UT did not surprise me as I had made some huge errors during the application process.. (I forgot to fill out the math department's application..) As for the others, I'm not sure. But no hard feelings.

Undergrad Institution: Small state school you've probably never heard of
Major(s): Mathematics, Physics
Minor : Chemistry
GPA: 3.97
Position in Class: top, I guess?
Type of Student: Domestic white female

(Revised) GRE Scores:
Q: 169 (98%)
V: 162 (90%)
W: 4.5 (72%)
M: 600 (37%) (I'm not sure how this happened. I was getting 65-75% on the practice tests. I'm going to go hide in a corner in shame now.)
Physics: 720 (59%)

Program Applying: Pure Math/Mathematical Physics (Math), High Energy Theory (Physics)

Research Experience: 2 year of MD simulations, a couple publications, a poster presentation at an international conference, and an REU in HET.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Outstanding student in math, various scholarships, dean's list type stuff, honors societies

Applying:
Duke University (Pure Math) -- Rejected 3/28 by e-mail to check website.
Stony Brook (Pure Math) -- Accepted(!!!) by mail postmarked 2/9. $20k/9 month TA +Graduate Council Fellowship, $10k/year. -- Offer declined. I don't think I can accurately express how much this pained me. Stony Brook is an awesome school, and I was lucky to get accepted there - my decision to go to Boulder over SB had to do with personal considerations.
Penn State (Pure Math) -- Rejected 4/25 by e-mail.
Emory (Pure Math) -- Accepted 2/7 by e-mail, $19,500/9 mo, health insurance and full tuition remission for up to 5 years. - Offer declined.
UNC Chapel Hill (Pure Math) -- Accepted 4/10 by email, $18k TA -- Offer Declined.

(The moral of the story: you only need one good acceptance. Also, you can bomb the subject GRE and survive.)

Also, in Physics:
RPI (Physics - HET) -- Accepted 1/26 by e-mail - Offer declined.
NC State (Physics - HET) --Accepted 1/24 by phone - Offer declined.
U Washington (Physics - HET) -- Rejected 3/23 by email.

Brown (Physics - HET) -- Rejected 2/20 by e-mail to check website.
UC Berkeley (Physics - HET) -- Rejected 2/29 by phone inquiry.

Undergrad Institution: Caltech
Majors: Mathematics and English
GPA: 2.6 overall, 2.4 in math
Type of Student: American white male

Grad Institution: Oklahoma
Major: M.A. Mathematics
GPA: 4.0

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (98%)
V: 170 (99%)
W: 5.0 (87%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 850 (90%)

Program Applying: Pure Math: Algebraic Geometry / Commutative Algebra

Research Experience: I have some results, but I'm unsure whether they're nontrivial to an expert in the field.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: None to mention.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Worked as a quant for about two years at various places.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Organized the grad student algebra seminar this year.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I'll be working on some research next semester with a professor whose collaborators on the project are at Georgia. (But I don't plan on continuing on this project for my dissertation.)

Applying to Where: (in alphabetical order)
Cornell (Ithaca) - Wrote 3/12 asking about status; told it's unlikely they will admit anyone from their waitlist. Rejected via email 3/20.
Georgia (Athens) - Invited to Graduate Visitation Day via email on 1/23 - Accepted (unofficially) via email 3/20; officially by mail, postmarked 3/20 - Declined 4/11.
Illinois (Chicago) -Accepted (unofficially) via email 4/4 - Attending!
Kansas (Lawrence) - Accepted (unofficially) via email 2/3; officially via website, 2/20 - Declined 3/27.
Michigan (Ann Arbor) - Rejected via email 3/9/2012
Missouri (Columbia) - Accepted (unofficially) via email 2/24 - Blumenthal scholarship (1yr/$1500) - Declined 3/27
Purdue (West Lafayette) - Accepted (unofficially) via email 3/9; officially via website, 3/20 - Declined 4/11. - Ross Fellowship (1yr/$20k) 4/12 - Andrews Fellowship (2yr/$20k) 4/13
Texas A&M (College Station) - Accepted (unofficially) via email 2/10; officially by postal mail, postmarked 2/16; - Dean's fellowship (1yr/$3k) 3/27 - Declined 4/9.
Utah (Salt Lake City) - Rejected via email 3/7/2012
Washington (Seattle) - Rejected via email 3/20/2012

Oklahoma's algebra program is focused very heavily on representation theory and related areas of number theory (i.e. Langlands). The courses in commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, homological algebra, category theory, etc. haven't run in so long that they're in danger of being taken out of the catalog automatically. I love the people here, but I don't have the personal connection to these subjects that my friends do, so I'm looking to transfer to a school with more of a focus on algebraic geometry. I got about half of these schools on my list when a professor I worked with asked an expert what schools I might want to look into, and the other half from asking around and doing my own research, but if anyone knows of any more programs I could apply to that have substantial numbers of students working on algebraic geometry or related areas then I'd be all ears. I'm also interested to hear what people think of my chances -- I haven't seen many people with a similar resume (GPA < 3.0), so there's not a lot of data to extrapolate from.

Good luck everybody! I can't wait to meet you all, whether in/around Chicago or at conferences.

Conclusion and personal thoughts after going through the process:

I was always conscious of my unknown undergrad and masters institution. Not taking the MGRE also limited my choices of places to apply. As a result I applied to a lot of "safety" schools. Still, given my unknown institution and not taking the MGRE i think my applications were widely successful (only 1 rejection, 4 no-decision-yet and 10 acceptances). Many schools mentioned my score of 20 in the putnam as a factor that led them to accept me so I guess that helped me a lot to counter all my negative points. I was accepted at what I consider good schools such as: Texas A&M, University of Pittsburgh, Missouri-Columbia but I chose to attend University of Miami as thats my home-town and I had many family-related reasons to stay in Miami. The fact that I got a 3-year fellowship (removing teaching duties) was extra icing on the cake.

I have officially ended the application process and I have written the above paragraph to offer my thoughts on the process. Hopefully it helps give information for applications next year...

Undergrad Institution: A public ivy, not necessarily known for mathematics.
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: 3.79
Type of Student: Domestic White Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (99%)
V: 163 (93%)

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored many different levels of math (mostly the three years of calculus) since the start of sophomore year.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: My recommenders all seem to rate me very highly and my advisor is pretty well known in Mathematical Biology.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: GPA soared after I quit playing division 1 soccer (much like the post above me)

Applying to Where:
Michigan-Ann Arbor - AIM-Rejected 4/10

Well my Math GRE score isnt the best, but I'm still hopeful (obviously Michigan is a serious stretch but I have family there so I'm applying anyway)

FINAL THOUGHTS: Very happy with the results. My MGRE score led me to apply to a few lesser known schools which made the admission process a lot happier for me than others. Having said that, Maryland AMSC has always been my top choice and once I heard from them it was pretty much a formality. Very excited about the future.
