Most graduate programs accept November test scores. There are a few exceptions though, so check their website to be sure. Programs with pre-christmas often have separate deadlines for the main application and supporting documents. No one has time to read applications before the christmas holidays anyway.

You can sign up, but you will have to pay a $25 late fee. Also, when you report your scores, both scores will be reported (unless you cancelled). The final kick in the pants is that you will not be able to register for the test (only hope to take it stand by) once you find out how well you did on November 8th.

The standyby thing...

1. Does that mean one goes to the test center and inform the administrator that one would like to take the test but hasn't registered?

2. Or does one need to inform the test center administrator/ETS about it beforehand?

3. Does one pay by credit/debit card on the spot then?

The GRE website and registration forms address all of these questions: http://www.ets.org/gre/subject/register/accommodations/

If you are going to register as a stand by you will need to get to the test center early to fill out payment information. I don't know how you are required to pay though. If you call ETS they won't take your information or anything, so yes, you don't have to register ahead of time.
