Very Poor GRE Subject Score.

Postby dariot96 » Tue Oct 16, 2018 2:29 pm

Hi everyone,

I am part of the applicants for the 2019 Fall, but as the title suggests my score on the mGRE was very poor (46% percentile in fact). I am interested on PhD programs in pure mathematics, and now I am wondering if I should change my submission plan. At the beginning, the schools that I chose to apply have reach programs, I mean No schools like Harvard Stanford or Princeton but all of them are in the top 50 in mathematics in USA. As part of my profile, I am an international male from South America, GPA 3.6/4, a medalist of the national and iberoamerican olympiads for undergraduate students, one published paper, and I am a Fulbright Scholar (also I think that my recommendation letters are strong). Since I received my mGRE score, I have been very worried because even most schools state that they do not have a cutoff for the GRE scores I feel like my application lost a lot of points.

So, I wonder if you could give me some advice about where to apply. I'll work with a placement specialist by the end of november, but I want to have an idea about what are my best options. In addition, even my poor mGRE score, I would like to consider one top program where I could be admitted, just to have a try.

I expected a higher score so then I did not register for retaking the exam on Octuber. If you know some master programs where it is possible to get full funding those are welcome too.

Thank you for your advices.

Which country are you from?

Can’t you register paying a late fee?

I hope it were, but it is not. Late registration ended in September, and I just received the score two days ago.

I got into Texas A&M for spring 2019. 19% for my subject GRE. 3.1 GPA

Have a paper accepted for publication, though, with original work. One glowing letter of recommendation from my advisor from my project who I also studied Neural Networks with.

I think you would probably have a good chance there.
