Undergrad Institution: Columbia
Major: Mathematics
Minor: Computer Science
GPA: 3.75ish
Type of Student: Domestic Male

GRE:
Q: 169
V: 169
W: 5.0
Math Subject Test: 800 (79%)

Program Applying: Mathematics Ph.D.

Research Experience: Did the Math REU at Columbia, but no real research experience otherwise
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Nothing other than generic academic ones (Dean's List, etc.)
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Was a TA for a few semesters, did a few summer internships (mostly computer science-related though), currently working on senior thesis
Any Other Info: One graduate math class. Not the top student in my department by any means. Even though my profile isn't exceptional, I'm still hoping for the best. (Maybe coming from a well-known math department will earn me some bonus points with adcoms?) Mostly interested in functional analysis and PDEs.

Applying to Where:
Columbia
Berkeley
MIT
Stanford
UCLA - Accepted! Super excited!
NYU
Yale - Waitlisted
Cornell
Brown
Minnesota
Ohio State - First acceptance!
Washington
UC Santa Barbara

Undergrad Institution: Clemson University
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): None
GPA: 3.09/4
Type of Student: Domestic White Male

Grad Institution: Clemson University
Major(s): Mathematics
GPA: 3.85/4

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 166 (90%)
V: 149 (42%)
W: 4.0 (59%)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 610 (~40th percentile)

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Mathematics Ph.D.

Research Experience: Independent study in algebraic topology with my advisor, an independent study in representation theory with an algebraist in our department, and a masters project on characteristic classes with my advisor. Also did a semester long research project in graph theory during undergrad.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List twice in undergrad. Had 4.0's in all my semesters as a graduate student except for a summer mini-mester.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA (2 years), Grader (3 years), Instructor (1 year).
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I know my recommenders extremely well, and some of them have connections at many of the universities I'm applying to. My first two letters will come from my advisor and my representation theory mentor, and I expect their letters to be strong. My last letter will come from the professor of my year long graduate algebra course, which I did extremely well in, and I expect that letter to be very good. I'm sure they will all mention how motivated I am as well. Attended a summer program on algebraic geometry/topology at the University of Chicago and a graduate student geometry/topology conference at UIC.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your Application and Might Matter: Many graduate courses in addition to the year long algebra sequence, in particular functional analysis, measure theory, complex analysis, algebraic number theory, and commutative algebra, with A's in each of these. Currently sitting in on a point-set topology course taught by my representation theory mentor, as I never took that and am just wanting to fill in that gap in my knowledge. I was very lazy during undergrad, which mainly stemmed from my severe depression, but I am much more mentally healthy, focused, and determined nowadays.

Applying to Where:

Undergrad Institution: medium state
Major(s): Math, Economics
GPA: 3.3 overall, 3.89 math, 3.46 econ
Type of Student: domestic white male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 160 (74%)
V: 167 (98%)
W: 3.5 (41%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Taking 10/27, current diagnostics around 40%

Program Applying: [Applied] Math, some Statistics PhD
Interests: numerical analysis, probability, analysis, statistics; applications to economics and biology

Research Experience:
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list couple semesters
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Worked for two years (part time during undergrad now full time in gap year) in biostatistics lab in cancer center at my university, no papers with my name on them, just some code. Will use letter of recommendation from PI for statistics programs, not math.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
Any Other Info That Shows Up On our App and Might Matter: Pretty famous letter writers

All math courses: calc III: A, linear algebra: A-, intro probability: A, ode: A, analysis I: A, analysis II: A, intro math statistics I/II: A/A, numerical analysis I/II: A-/A, intro real analysis: A-, number theory: A-
(econometrics in econ department: A)

Question for the world: Are my chances better at statistics programs given my courses and work experience? I prefer math and am kicking myself for not taking more pure classes, math REU and working as a grader/tutor in math... Many schools on my list are at math departments at schools without statistics departments.

Applying to Where:
This is currently an enormous list of schools from (usnews) rank 20-100, will update later

CUNY Graduate Center
Notre Dame
Tufts: Accepted! (2/15)

Undergrad Institution: Ivy
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: 3.77
Type of Student: Domestic biracial female

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 168 (98%)
V: 170 (94%)
W: 6.0 (99%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: 720 (63%), and it was my second time taking it. I'm ready to write it off, though - it's not PROHIBITIVELY bad, and the test is ridiculous.

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Mathematics Ph.D. and separate applications for interdisciplinary Ph.D.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: YMC, JMM
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Math department tutor.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Very close with most of my recommenders.
Any Other Info: My home department is smallish but very strong, so although I am well-liked and respected in my department, I make no pretensions to being a top student. I expect my math recs will call me "enthusiastic and boundlessly curious" rather than "brilliant." I fully recognize that admission to a G1 program might be a pipe dream.

Applying to Where:
Math-
Cornell
OSU -Admitted! (2.14.19)
Urbana-Champaign - Admitted! (1.30.19)
Notre Dame - Admitted! (Informal offer, followed by an email from my POI) (2.6.19)

UChicago
Northwestern - Rejected

Undergrad Institution: Honors class of the university in China with First rank on math (But not as same well-know as for overall rank, however still good)
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: Mathematics 86.44/100, Cumulative 85.22/100 (top 10% among all math students in our university. We study very hard graduate courses / courses with graduate level, our first rank is only 89 or 91.)
Type of Student: International Chinese Male

Grad Institution: Well-known for the major but not for overall in US
Major(s): Computational and Applied Math
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: Mathematics 3.90/4.00, Cumulative 3.83/4.00

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 152 (56%)
W: 3.5 (41%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 910 (97%) (Sep.15, went to take the test almost without any preparation. My math background is very solid)

TOEFL Score: (104 = R29/L25/S22/W28) (Took this more than 2 years ago so I am looking for toefl waiver)

Program Applying: Mainly wanna go back to pure math, but applied math is OK. I want to do PDE analysis or differential geometry.

Research Experience: 1 preprint of independent PDE paper with 43 pages on prepare; 1 short paper of its generalization currently writing; Several new self-discovered theorems of Finite Stochastics Process(Recently done, may have not included in my application); Currently doing generalization of a stochastic analysis conclusion. Give lectures / presentations on 3 advanced seminars including homological algebra, quantum stochastic calculus and Mersenne Prime.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Consecutive 3 year third-class scholarship in undergrad; 2 First-award of national math contests (one of them is only of preliminary the another one is real); 1 First-award of math contests within Province. Bunches of mathematical contest awards before undergrad.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA to undergrad and grad since I enrolled. Give recitation lectures.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Studied courses were hard. 70% were graduate course and almost all to graduate level.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I am a Ph.D. student in applied math department but I am planning to transfer to another program. 2 of my professors here voluntarily told me that they are willing to offer me very strong recommendation. I also have passed all the Qual Exams for Ph.D. here.

Applying to Where: (Still on decision, since I don't wanna take toefl anymore)

Impossible
Stanford

Almost impossible
UCB
UCLA
Caltech
NYU
Columbia

Still possible
Brown
UPenn
UTaustin
Umichigan

God, please let at least one of them accept me
UCSD
GAtech
Rutgers
Northwestern
UIUC

Remark: I never doubt my ability on my math background and research ability. The reason I need to reapply is simply, I haven't found research advisor that fit my interests. All research I have done are almost all self-discovered. Even if I got rejected by all of them, I can still stay my current institute to do research, so I always have backup safety. I think most of you are not in the situation like me, so please be careful if you choose programs too risky just like this list(International student has a natural disadvantage on applying US Ph.D. programs in most of the cases because of the reasons of unfamiliarty of background and funding).

Undergrad Institution: Top European (for math)
Major(s): Math, B.Sc.
Minor(s): Philosophy
GPA: 3.86 / 4.0
Type of Student: International, White male

Graduate Institution: Same as undergraduate
Major(s): Math, M.Sc.
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: 4.0 / 4.0

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 165 (96%)
W: 4.5 (82%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 840 (85%)

The subject GRE could have gone a bit better since I scored >90% on the practice exams. I didn't feel like the actual exam was any harder but I'm pretty sure that I messed up more due to nervousness.

TOEFL: 117 = R30/L30/S29/W28

Program Applying: PhD in Combinatorial Optimization (CO, ACO, CS or Math depending on the university)

Research Experience:
  • ~1 year in applied logic (formal mathematics, proof assistants)
    • Supervised by my 3rd LOR writer
    • Work was presented at a major conference but not by me
  • ~3 years on an industry research project on vehicle routing
    • Worked on this project from the prototype phase to the first practical application
    • Supervised by my 1st and 2nd LOR writers
    • Wrote my bachelors thesis about this work
    • Some interesting results along the way but nothing published yet (outside of that thesis)
  • Recently started working on masters thesis
Awards/Honors/Recognitions:
  • Fairly prestigious, merit-based national scholarship
Pertinent Activities or Jobs:
  • Not super relevant: ~2 years contract work in software development (C#)
  • Private tutoring here and there during the last 4 years
  • Research and software development (C++, Python) for that industry research project mentioned above
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
  • I've taken quite a few grad courses, especially in discrete mathematics / CS theory and mathematical logic.
  • I've met potential advisors at two of my top choices in person and talked to them extensively. The conversations went really well and they encouraged me to apply and contact them.
  • All my letter writers have known me for years and I expect that my letters will be very strong. My 1st letter writer in particular is a leading researcher in my field and has explicitly told me that he'll write an exceptionally strong LOR.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: N/A

Applying to Where: (subject to change)
  • U. of Waterloo - CO - submitted (2018/12/21) - admitted (2019/2/15) - received official admission letter w/ full funding (2019/2/20)

Undergrad Institution: big public school, very well known for STEM
Major(s): Mathematics, Physics
Minor(s): None
GPA: 3.75 cumulative, 3.88 major, 3.95 junior and senior year.
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q:169 (96? I forgot)
V:169 (99)
W:4.5 (82)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
570 lolololololololol nothing is real. 29%

I studied for the general for a total of 3 hours and got a near perfect score except writing, but I studied for the subject test at least 2 hours a day for 3 months and got a 570. FML.

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: PhD Applied math/differential equations.

Research Experience: 1 year plasma physics, REU in acoustics with a presentation at a meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, 2ish years in applied networks with a small portion becoming a textbook chapter, 1.5 years in fluids which became my senior thesis. Senior thesis is currently being turned into a paper and will hopefully be submitted soon?

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Nothing worth mentioning

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA for intro physics, advanced mechanics, and PDEs. More tutoring experience than you could shake a stick at. Taught a class (wrote the syllabus, gave out homework, graded, lectured, the whole 9 yards) for freshmen about mathematics in social science.
Taught high school science for a year then went to work for a company that makes eyeglass lenses.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I know my recommenders well. Also took grad classes in game theory, complex analysis, nonlinear ODEs, and asymptotic analysis and did some fun projects on Van der Pol oscillators and population dynamics with periodic birth/death rates.

Applying to Where:
Iowa: submitted 1/11. Brief email exchange with head of the program, expecting official acceptance soon
Brandeis: submitted 1/13
Rensselaer: submitted, 12/15, admitted 12/20. At least 23k/yr TA, 24k pending Board of Trustees approval, >30k if I teach during the summer.
Northwestern ESAM: Submitted 12/25, admitted via website 2/9, offered 2737/month plus a 3000 bonus and a health insurance subsidy.
Washington: submitted 1/13, funded masters offer 1/22, $2,341/month. Rejected from PhD but I expected that so the funded masters is awesome.
Maryland: submitted 1/05

A combination of getting an acceptance super early and my boss getting fired in November and my work schedule going nuts for the past 2 months led to me not submitting as many applications as I planned to. Oh well, still got one!

Undergrad Institution: Large state school
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Computer Science
GPA: 3.63 overall, 3.7 in major
Type of Student: White boy, domestic. Only minority group I can claim membership in is redheads, which I rather doubt will score me any points.

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 168 (98%)
W: 4.5 (82%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: Not good at all. Probably won't submit except where required; may switch a couple of applications to Master's instead of PhD if it allows me to avoid submitting subject score. Definitely should've grinded more calc problems, & been a lot smarter about time usage during the test sitting itself.

Program Applying: Pure Math, except where noted

Research Experience: Nothing traditional, but I did prepare statistical reports, presentations, filings etc. on a regular basis while working in actuarial science, so I may try to mention some of that stuff if it strikes me as appropriate.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list multiple times, attended school on full tuition academic scholarship
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Worked in actuarial science for about 2.5 years following graduation from undergrad; currently working in special education
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Passed 6 actuarial exams in a span of about 3 years (took the first 2 senior year of college, before I was working in that industry). Significant pattern of improvement in grades over time (got A's in all but one of the math & CS classes I took junior & senior year). Decent programming skills (Java, C++, Python, SQL, Matlab) and comp sci knowledge, if that's something anyone cares about

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: departmental honors and awards, deans list, just normal stuff
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: grader for upper and lower level courses
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: basic graduate courses, two independent studies lined up next semester but nothing special
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I don't know what I want to specialize in graduate school, which could hurt my chances. Letters are probably generic

Undergrad Institution: UChicago
Major: Math
GPA: 3.524 overall, 3.9375 in math classes
Type of Student: Domestic, Male, White/MENA

GRE Revised General Test:

W: 3.5 (41%) :(
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list first 3 years
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA'd for grad discrete math once
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Taken 3 grad classes, taking one now, recommendation letters are hopefully good (at least two have said it would be good, the other two hopefully will be) and come from fairly reputable folk. Participated in Notre Dame RTG and summer analysis bootcamp.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: The apps have asked about the education level of parents and mine didn't finish high school. I think for undergrad that helped, not sure if it's relevant now or not. Also my SoP had a bad pun. Haven't narrowed down completely what I would like to do yet, generally interested in number theory/algebra/topology/some parts of analysis (and took mostly analysis classes...).

Comments:
My top ranked schools that I "may get into" are Stanford and Caltech. However, after some thought I decided that I would choose UCSD and Brown over Caltech, so I withdrew from the waitlist. In a week or so, I'll email Stanford to ask where I sit on their waitlist. 2/12.

Stony Brook is very very good at geometry, but they're also only good at geometry. Since I care about geometry I thought about it a lot, but decided that Brown and UCSD are better options (due to location/strength in other disciplines). I'd heard that Stony Brook is rather depressing due to social isolation. The Brown stipend also trumps the Stony Brook stipend by a long shot. 2/21.
