That's being a little too optimistic. I assume it'll be more like "What a smug asswipe, he probably won't even pass his quals..."

Not sure, but still have yet to hear from them or Columbia's APAM program.

Have you heard anything more? I'm also waiting for MIT applied math so your post gives me hope! But I'm worried that it's getting rather late.
I've been told I'm on the waiting list by the professor that contacted me.

Has anyone heard anything from U Chicago, for any of their Mathematics-related programs? I've only heard back from two out of nine programs that I applied to so far... starting to get nervous.

Several offers for pure mathematics were sent out a month ago. It doesn't look like UChicago has multiple rounds, so if you applied for a pure math PhD, you'll probably get either waitlisted or rejected soon.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about those. I applied for a Computational and Applied Mathematics PhD, so there is still hope, haha. Thanks! :D

WHY do schools send out offers, then radio silence, then rejections, seemingly with no rhyme or reason to it?? Why haven't I received my Cornell rejection yet?? I know they've already made their offers--I haven't seen someone get in after the first round on GradCafe in years. Why do schools give their rejected applicants false hope this way? (Cornell isn't as bad about it as Stanford, but still.)

It strikes me that there are 3 proper ways to release decisions:

1. Rejections first (e.g. Princeton, which is very ethical in this regard)
2. Send out each decision as soon as it is made (e.g. Michigan)
3. Release all your decisions at once

Grad cafe may be useful, but clearly not even close to everyone posts their results there. Assuming Cornell doesn't accept anyone else after their first round is wrong. They have a small program in pure math (8-12 students each year). Even if you weren't in the first round (probably 10-15 acceptances), it's quite possible you will be accepted later. As long as a school gives you a decision before April 15, then they are being proper.

I mean, technically, sure. There's no law that says schools HAVE to have their decisions released by some date bounded away from April 15. Maybe "proper" was the wrong word for me to use. What I'm talking about has more to do with "decency."

I think it is positively indecent for Stanford to hold off on rejecting anyone way longer than necessary (given that the facts suggest it's clear from the get that they KNOW they're going to be rejecting certain folks). The Cornell case is more difficult to evaluate, but I just hate being in limbo, and it's so easy to get frustrated! I've heard the metaphor that admissions are like pruning a tree--they trim from the leaves (very strong applicants admitted) and roots (weak applicants rejected), but knowing that just makes me feel worse.

From your profile it seems you're in the same situation as I with regard to Cornell. I wish you well.

I am also wondering if anyone has heard from CAM. This year’s applied decision seems to be so late. Or am I out already?

Another person seems to have gotten an acceptance from Courant. Based on recent years, they appear to accept students early then wait to send rejections in March or April. I hope that doesn't mean that if we didn't hear back yet that we're out.

Anyone have any idea what's going on with Brown? They clearly sent out a first round of acceptances on the 4th, along with some rejections today and yesterday. Should anyone without an acceptance just assume they've been rejected?

For pure specifically, though any info about their selection/notification process could be useful

Wisconsin will start any moment now and probably in bulk.

Also, I got emails suggesting that Ohio State is preparing to send out more acceptances soon.

I haven't seen any rejections from Brown pure. They'll probably come out next week.

I applied to 20+ schools, and I have yet to hear back from most of them. So far I have gotten rejections, and personally, I don't feel confident that I will get into anywhere else. I might just give up on waiting regardless whether it is early or not.

I'm in a similar position. Applied to 15 schools, got rejected from 3 and told I'll likely be given an offer at another but it's a safety school which my advisor recommended I don't go to.

Q is an algebraic field extension of degree 2 over Q because the minimal polynomial is x^2 + 1, which is a degree 2 polynomial. Hmm...I think another way to think of Q is Q[x] / (x^2 + 1). This is really just the same thing as C = R = R[x] / (x^2+1).

I’m anxiously waiting too. Out of the 15 schools I applied to, I’ve only been accepted to one (my safety), rejected from four, and I’m pretty sure I’m already out at three more. Michigan and UT Austin are two of the ones I haven’t counted myself out yet, but as it gets later and later in the process I’m becoming increasingly terrified I’ll only get into one school.

personally I wouldn't do something like that at least until the end of February, unless I had a good reason to act sooner (e.g. program has a history of releasing its decisions earlier than that, someone in the department specifically told you that you'd hear back by now, etc). I know it's hard to wait but it's still pretty early in the admissions cycle for most programs
