Schools that care more about mGRE than GPA?

Post by eisenstein » Thu Aug 02, 2018 11:39 pm

I know that GPA is extremely important but my uGPA is quite low. I'm trying to overcome this with high mGRE score. Are there any schools prioritize mGRE scores over GPA? Or, are there any schools, ranked between 50 and 150, that loves high (800+) mGRE scores?

This is just my opinion, but I believe doing well in rigorous courses and research far outweighs the mGRE since that is essentially what graduate school is about. However, if you're getting 85-90+% on the mGRE as a domestic applicant, I'm sure that'll catch a few eyes, especially in the 50-100 ranked schools. It also depends why you did poorly in those courses (if there is a reason), and you have an opportunity to explain that in your statement of purpose.

What do you mean be "quite low"? Below 3.0? If you have below a 3.0 but score 85%+ on the mGRE, your best bet would probably be to apply to a terminal masters program, do very well there, then reapply to PhD programs.
