Boston University

I'm currently deciding where I will go for grad school pure math and BU is now one of the top of my choices. From what I heard, they have a really vibrant community between graduate students from around Massachusetts like Harvard, MIT, Tuffs, Brandeis, Northeastern, etc, so that's extremely nice for me. Plus they guarantee support (including summer) for 5 years. Has anyone visited the school and has some inputs about the program there (I am an international student so I won't be able to visit the school at this point)?

Hi, I'm also accepted to BU and strongly considering attending. I'll be visiting at the end of next week so I can try and give you whatever insight I gain from that. Do you have an idea of what you'd like to study there?

I'm interested in areas that are related to scientific computing and numerical analysis. BU has a strong program in these fields when I check their website :D I am also interested in dynamical system. Also since I am an international student, it might be harder for me to find jobs/internships during summer due to visa restriction, so I am strongly consider BU since it offers me support for summers as well. From your post, it looks like you also get full funding, including summer. Is BU your first choice at this point? I got a friend who is currently wailisted by BU so I want to make my decision as promptly as possible to help him.

Nice, seems like we have similar interests. Boston is definitely strong in dynamical systems, and it does seem like they have a lot of people doing interesting computational stuff, although it seems like not as much is pure numerical analysis or scientific computing. I am leaning toward it over my other acceptance and planning to decide which to decline soon after visiting BU. Not yet sure what I would do if I get in at any of the places I am waitlisted though :o

Applied math also sounds appealing to me, also more favorable for job prospect after PhD. Thanks for your input :D Are you interested in pure or applied math?

I prefer pure math but I like to know about and understand the applications of what I am doing. So both, I guess 8)

I can't say much about the program unless it's about number theory, but it is a great school with a beautiful setting. Boston is an amazing city to experience as an international student because it's filled with diversity, job opportunities, American culture, history, and also very safe. You're a short walk from Harvard and MIT math departments and only a few hours away from other prestigious universities and big cities. If you're from a warm climate, bring lots of warm clothes as the Northeast gets very cold.

Thank you for your input. The closed interactions between BU and the surrounding schools like MIT, Harvard, etc is one of the reasons that makes me strongly consider BU. Cold weather might be a challenge for me as I come from a tropical country, but that is a minor factor. :D
Now I just need to wait for password about his visit to BU this week to decide :D

I pm'd wind. If anyone else is considering BU, didn't get to visit, and would like to hear my impressions, feel free to shoot me a message.
