Hi everyone,

What would be the better choice if my area of interest is Number Theory?.

Your suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Have you heard anything from Pittsburgh yet?

No, not yet. I've already heard from UF, but I haven't accepted the offer yet. I truly am interested in UF but I wanna get a better idea of UPitt program and its standards. Btw, I was told that Upitt would make their decisions by the end of this month.

I don't do number theory but I quickly glanced the research page of Pittsburgh and didn't notice senior faculty doing research in number theory. The dept seems to lean heavily on applied math research.

I agree with Tianma799 that Pitt appears to have more of an applied angle to its research areas. It looked like Florida had a few people researching in Number theory so that would make that one the better option for you. Also thanks for the heads up about Pitt!

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. Yeahh and I think they are both evenly ranked universities; so it probably comes down to my area of interest. Anyway I look forward to hearing back from UPitt too.

There's probably a single person who can advise you on Number Theory at the University of Pittsburgh - Thomas Hales. So if you are interested, I would email him in advance, otherwise, you might be forced to work in a different area.

Hello Kb3, Thank you for your consideration. I actually went through UPitt website and got to know that they're very much into research areas in Applied Mathematics whereas UF has a strong faculty that does research in number theory and I believe UF has a better pure mathematical background than UPitt. Therefore, I accepted their offer.
