Which schools outside of the top 10 are very good in geometry and/or topology?

I heard half of the department in UC Santa Barbara’s are doing lower dimension topology. I am not sure how accurately this is (it’s from a PhD student inside), but you can check its website.

Two obvious choices are Northwestern and Stonybrook.

First, I would check out the Topology Students Resource page: http://people.math.gatech.edu/~dmargali ... ndex.shtml and the Geometric Group Theory information page run by Jon McCammond at UCSB: http://web.math.ucsb.edu/~jon.mccammond/geogrouptheory/.

I only applied to G/T programs, and the schools that were on my list at one point or another are the following, in no particular order. I'll put a (!) next to ones I was especially excited about:

Stanford University
University of Chicago (!)
University of Michigan
Rutgers University - NB
Georgia Institute of Technology (!)
Boston College (!)
UC - Santa Barbara
University of Utah (!)
Vanderbilt University
Tufts University
University of Virginia (!)
Temple University
University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign

Edit: I should note that this list is remarkably biased to my own interests, so this list isn't exhaustive/definitive in any way, nor does it say anything about any school not on this list.

Thanks for your reply. If you don't mind me asking, what excited you about those schools with the (!)?

Wow, that's a great resource of advice! And not just for topology, but for all mathematics students, really.

A number of personal biases. Mostly I get excited about programs that I have some kind of personal interest in/personal experience with.

I'm fascinated with some of the work being done at U. Chicago, plus I love the city. I have some experience with faculty at Georgia Tech and two faculty members are doing the exact work I want to do. Boston College is a fairly new program that is dedicated to creating an excellent program in only GT/AG/ANT, they have a solid focus on teaching, and Boston is a great place to live. Utah is gorgeous and Mladin Bestvina seems like a great guy, plus the AG at Utah seems good. I met a 4th-year graduate student from Utah and they had nothing but good things to say about the program. I've met a number of the faculty at UVa and they seem pretty chill. They hold an annual Virginia Topology conference which has attracted some interesting speakers in years past.

Is there an aspect of geometry/topology you are particularly interested in?

SUNY Binghamton has a large number of geometers. Most work in differential geometry and geometric group theory. Another great place is UICU. Has a large number of people in geometry/topology.
