Which schools outside of the top 10 are very good in geometry and/or topology?
for current and prospective graduate students in mathematics

Two obvious choices are Northwestern and Stonybrook.superballzach wrote:Which schools outside of the top 10 are very good in geometry and/or topology?
Thanks for your reply. If you don't mind me asking, what excited you about those schools with the (!)?RoutingCube wrote:First, I would check out the Topology Students Resource page: http://people.math.gatech.edu/~dmargali ... ndex.shtml and the Geometric Group Theory information page run by Jon McCammond at UCSB: http://web.math.ucsb.edu/~jon.mccammond/geogrouptheory/.
I only applied to G/T programs, and the schools that were on my list at one point or another are the following, in no particular order. I'll put a (!) next to ones I was especially excited about:
Stanford University
University of Chicago (!)
University of Michigan
Rutgers University - NB
Georgia Institute of Technology (!)
Boston College (!)
UC - Santa Barbara
University of Utah (!)
Vanderbilt University
Tufts University
University of Virginia (!)
Temple University
University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
Edit: I should note that this list is remarkably biased to my own interests, so this list isn't exhaustive/definitive in any way, nor does it say anything about any school not on this list.
Wow, that's a great resource of advice! And not just for topology, but for all mathematics students, really.RoutingCube wrote:First, I would check out the Topology Students Resource page: http://people.math.gatech.edu/~dmargali ... ndex.shtml ...
A number of personal biases. Mostly I get excited about programs that I have some kind of personal interest in/personal experience with.superballzach wrote:Thanks for your reply.
