I am extremely nervous. My professors think I barely have a chance of getting admitted into my own school, let alone any of the top 10.

I think what makes it worse is I keep thinking, "How am I supposed to go from where I am now to writing papers in a few years?".

 Couldn't be worse than me. One of my recommenders who I was closed to agreed to write me LORs, then changed their mind  Now what should I do

I'm super worried too. I wonder when do most grad schools annouce their results. I heard Chicago does it super early.

You can check gradcafe for admission / rejection email dates. From what I've seen, most admissions from top schools happen during January to early February (with a few exceptions) and rejections come sometime later (say late January to late February / March).

For example last year Chicago started sending out acceptances during the second week of January. It looks like Stanford, Princeton, MIT, Berkeley and the like send out their offers usually mid to late January.

Yeah it's not the prettiest looking site ever. But in about two months time most of us will be checking it very frequently anyway.

I decided to not be productive and look up acceptance / rejection mailing dates for a few top universities (based on whataver available data there is at gradcafe):

Stanford:
2017 - Acceptances on 20-21 Jan. / Rejections on 14 Feb.
2016 - Acceptances around 15-26 Jan. / Rejections on 22 Feb.
2015 - Rejections on 30+ Jan.
2013 - Acceptances up until 9 Feb. / Rejections on 12 Feb.
2012 - Acceptances between 9 - 13 Feb. / Sporadic rejections until 18 Feb.

Princeton:
2017 - Acceptances and rejections in the same day 20 Jan.
2016 - Acceptances on 21 Jan. / Rejections on 22 Jan.
2015 - Rejections on 22 Jan.
2013 - Acceptances and rejections on 25 Jan.
2012 - Acceptances and rejections on 17-19 Jan.
2011 - Rejections on 26+ Jan.

Harvard:
2017 - Acceptances around 27 Jan. / Rejections on 3 Feb.
2016 - Acceptances on 20-21 Jan. / Rejections on 28 Jan.
2013 - Rejections sporadically on 5-11 Feb.
2012 - Acceptances around 20 Jan. / Rejections on 6-9 Feb.
2011 - Acceptances around 16 Jan. / Rejections on 12-17 Feb.

MIT:
2017 - Acceptances around 20 - 26 Jan. / Rejections on 14 Feb.
2016 - Acceptances around 20 - 21 Jan. / Rejections on 25 Feb.
2013 - Acceptances around 17 Jan. / Rejections around 13-14 Feb.
2012 - Acceptances on 14-17 Jan. / Rejections on 22-23 Feb.
2011 - Rejections on 28-29 Jan.

University of Chicago:
2017 - Acceptances around 9-11 Jan. / Rejections on 27-28 Jan.
2016 - Acceptances on 9 - 11 Jan. / Rejections on 17 Feb.
2013 - Acceptances around 9-11 Jan. and 3 Feb. / Rejections around 8 - 11 Feb.
2012 - Accepted people sporadically 12-30 Jan. / Rejected people sporadically 3 - 28 Feb.
2011 - Rejections around 24-28 Feb.

Berkeley:
2017 - Acceptances on 27 Jan. / Rejections on 3-4 Feb.
2016 - Acceptances around 29 Jan. - 9 Feb. / Rejections on 14-15 Mar.
2015 - Rejections on 3-4 Mar.
2013 - Acceptances on 3 Feb. / Rejections 14+ Feb. (up to 2 Mar.)
2012 - Acceptances around 25 Jan. - 2 Feb. / Rejections from 23 Feb. up until 27 Mar.

Columbia:
2017 - Acceptances and rejections on 31 Jan.
2016 - Acceptances on 19 & 29-30 Jan. / Rejections on 1-2 Feb.
2012 - Acceptances and rejections on 1-2 Feb.
2011 - Acceptances on 11 Feb. / Rejections on 9-10 Mar.

Yale:
2017 - Acceptances on 17 Jan. / Rejections on 10 Feb.
2016 - Acceptances around 11-21 Jan. / Rejections on 21-22 Jan.
2014 - Acceptances on 22 Jan. / Rejections on 1 Feb.
2012 - Acceptances on 20 Jan. / Rejections on 16-17 Feb.

Michigan:
2017 - Acceptances on 1-2 Feb. / Rejections on 8 Mar.
2016 - Acceptances on 29 Jan. & 12 Feb. / Rejections on 16-17 Mar.
2013 - Acceptances on 6 Feb. / Rejections from 6 Feb. up until 13 Mar.
2012 - Acceptances on 15-17 Feb. / Rejections on 9 Mar.
2011 - Acceptances on 14-16 Feb. / Rejections on 7-8 & 22 Mar.

Caltech:
2017 - Acceptances on 10 Feb. / Rejections on 17-17 Feb.
2016 - Acceptances on 2 Feb. / Rejections on 31 Mar. (only 1 though and it seems pretty late - it could perhaps be a rejection from the waitlist)
2013 - Acceptances around 12-14 Feb. / Rejections on 28 Feb.
2012 - Acceptances on 14-15 Feb. / Rejections on 24 Feb.

UCLA:
2017 - Sporadic acceptances from 13 Jan. to 8 Feb. / Sporadic rejections from 10 Feb. to 30 Mar.
2016 - Acceptances around 8-21 Jan. / Rejections on 4 Feb. & 18-23 Feb.
2015 - Rejections from 24 Feb. up until 18 Mar.
2013 - Rejections on 30 Jan. & 14 Feb. (what's up with all of these rejections on Valentine's day? lol)
2012 - Rejections on Mar. 14

I wouldn't say all of them are accurate predictors of the future but you can see certain trends. In particular a lot of the top ones tend to send out their acceptances in January and early February.

Anyway maybe this will be useful in two months time

Some programs allow to submit fall semester grade. I wonder is it really necessary to do that considering fall grades are usually available in early Jan in many places, which is way past the deadlines.

Getting my profs to submit their letters is such a pain.... I don't want to constantly nag them but the deadlines are fast approaching. All of my applications are in so it's just the beginning of Anxiety Season

I am having a similar issue. At this point I will start sending out reminders every three days until December 7th, then every day afterwards.

That's a surefire way to piss them off. Professors are still human beings with other obligations and responsibilities (likely *many* more than the average student), they will eventually get to submit your letter. A single reminder a few days before the deadline is fine, then maybe remind them again if the deadline passed and they still haven't submitted it. Programs allow a bit more wiggle room for recommenders to send everything since they're aware not every letter makes it by the deadline.

Yes, many do. Publications really aren't as important as some people (usually undergrads themselves) make them out to be.

Yeah it's a good idea to do this for other programs too, I only did a list for pure math.

In other news my fourth professor finally got to send all the rec letters on the day of the deadline. I was getting worried there, phew.

My professors were on the admissions committee at Princeton for a couple years. They said to send in as many recs as you can. I've submitted 5 for each school that allows 5.

I agree. I sent 4~5. I think we just to make sure no one of them is significantly weaker than the others. Or it won't help if not harm. I think very few undergrads can have worked very closely with 5 profs unless they do many reus.

The easiest way to overcome the anxiety of applications is by picking up a basic text and start working though all the problems.

In all honesty, I'm having a hard time accepting the fact that I'll be expected to produce original research four years from now and will find out which school I'll be doing that at in four months.

Hi guys,
Just wanted to wish everyone good luck. I was in your position last year, and this was a very anxious time for me.

I guess all you can realistically do now is wait it out. I don't really have much advice on coping, but you will get through it. Hopefully you will start getting some results back soon!

Just a quick question:

If a school states on their website that they will start reviewing applications on a certain date, approximately how long after that date should students be expecting acceptances/rejections?

Thanks.

It seems to vary based on the school. You can look at TheGradCafe (https://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php) and check when people were sent acceptances last year though.
