And how much do you need to score to pass the test?

Is this a serious question?

To which schools are you planning to apply?

The GRE is a ``standardized" admission test, like an ACT or SAT. It's meant to give those in charge of admission the illusion of a measurement of your mathematical abilities. There is no pass or fail, just a score between 200 and 900. You might ask prospective schools what kind of numbers they typically look for, and how much they care about the test. (It turns out your score might not be that important. I got into half the schools I applied to with an extremely low score and a note explaining what went wrong... and a very nice application otherwise.)

Joey's words are absolutely correct and what I was getting at. If your grades and undergraduate institution are sh!t, then you will not even get into a second-tier school, no matter how well you score on this test. Conversely, if you have good grades (3.9-4.0) in mathematics, went to a decent school, and have research experience, then even a middling GRE score (50th-60th percentile) will be sufficient to get into a solid if not excellent program.

The GRE is across the board the most grossly overrated factor of one's application. Let this be a warning to posterity.

Hi Guys

I just would like to share you some things I know :this year one of friend I know got admitted to Courant institute of Maths - NYU with a fellowship with no teaching duties for the first year. He got admitted BEFORE the grad school emailed him to let him know that they had not received his GRE MATH score. He just graduated from a mediocre university in math but has very strong LORs from Weizmann institute - Israel.
