Mathematic Masters

I'm not sure if I want to get a Mathematics PhD or not. So I am considering getting a Masters Degree first.

If I did, I don't really want to stick around in the United States, I'd like to go abroad. I have a sense for the top German/French (don't really want to go to UK but if I have to I will) schools and kinda get that other than SFI other countries don't really have much to offer. How competitive is it in general to get into these programs, and would it hurt my application to do a masters in France or Germany? Is Continental Europe known for subpar masters programs?

I have searched the forum so I have some ideas, but I don't think anyone has answered these questions before!

Thank you!

Why Germany and France? Why not Canada (Toronto McGill) or UK (Oxbridge)?

I don't want to live in Canada (I would rather not leave the US just to live somewhere just like the US for two years)... good point about Oxbridge though. I guess I was concerned about the cost of going to UK schools. I don't want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on tuition.

Okay clearly you have never been to Canada.

The cost of going to school in Germany and France is low - however, the cost of living is high and there is very little funding given for graduate students. There are external scholarships for example DAAD, but they barely give you enough to scrape by and are EXTREMELY competitive.

Really? :( I thought I read it is less expensive than the US.

Currently at my school I pay about 3k for foodplan and 12k for housing a year. 15 /9 is 1.333k a month on basic living. I read you can get 500 - 750 per month rent dependibg on the school possible even less. Then you eat frugally, and dont ever splurge. I can live on less than 3.5k for food in a year whicg is 300 a month almost. I will bring soap and toothpaste there myself.

All that is missing from the comaprison is scholarships and fasfa. Does fasfa not work overseas? Say 900 a month, thats 10.8k a year for everything including food etc.

I will look closer at canada as per your suggestion, by the way. You are right I haven't been there before.
