Three now, according to the grad cafe.

Besides, can anyone tell me what does sweat thread mean? By looking into the sweat thread last year, I guess it is something related to nervousness, but not completely sure.

It probably means a sweet dilemma of making a decision among many offers. Also, applicants would ask detailed questions about their admitted programs, such as the faculty and the research experience. However, I do believe most of them will make a solid decision in mind before asking such questions.

You are correct, a sweat thread is just a thread where you can "sweat it out." That way the admissions results thread doesn't get flooded with questions, congratulations, etc.

For example, here's a question for everyone: On my applications to Washington U in St. Louis and Ohio State, my test scores are still listed as "incomplete" or "unofficial." I sent my scores from ETS in November, and ETS confirmed last week (when I called them) that the scores were sent and received by all my schools. I made sure to send the scores to the department or the graduate school depending on each school's requirements. Has anyone else had this issue? The math departments are swamped with applications so they haven't been great at responding so far.

Honestly you're fine. They probably just slow on the uptake. However, when in doubt, inundate their emails with questions or call. But honestly I think you're alright.

Also how the hell are people accepted already? I'm curious what they're applications were like.

Turns out my birthday was wrong on my application to OSU, which is why they hadn't matched my scores to my application. Luckily it's an easy fix.

Well, let me admit here that I am going bananas waiting for these decisions. I am not a stellar mathematics student like you folks here on the forum. Looking at y'all getting accepted already, while I probably will have to wait till April to hear anything back is not nice (sorry, I might be a little jealous). Plus being an international kind of makes the competition unbearable.

Am I the only one freaking out here? Oh yeah, not to mention some typos in my apps like when I accidentally put my temporary US address as my permanent address in three apps. Gosh, can I get my decisions already?

You're not alone. I also have some small desire to know which CONTINENT I'll be spending the next FIVE+ YEARS OF MY LIFE IN. Argh...

Yeah I'm also freaking out waiting to hear back. I have no idea how competitive I am and really don't want to end up not getting in anywhere. Also, our profiles are really similar haha.

I'm not freaking out at all to be honest. I don't really care if they accept me. It only puts things on hold for a year. In the meantime, I'll be doing a MSc and making money. No biggie for me.

Freakishly similar aye; we even have same GRE scores. I do not have grad classes however, as I am from a LAC. Also you are domestic and I am not.

Did anyone else apply to Maryland? On the application there was a "supplemental application," which asked for an essay and a list of textbooks. Was this essay supposed to be different from the statement of purpose? I only submitted one such piece of writing. I have no idea how those two documents should have been different.

Yes it was different... a text book list is pretty often asked for.

I understand about the textbook list, which is Part II of the Supplementary Application. My question is about Part I, and whether this part should have been submitted along with or instead of a statement of purpose.

Did you apply to Maryland? It is not on your list on the applicant profile thread.

I guess I forgot to add that one. I did not add anything supplementary because it isn't required.

I don't think I am the first one receiving offers from the OSU. As I remember, some people received it a week ago (from Grad cafe and this forum).

I've just received an offer from OSU early in the morning too so I think they are now sending out the first round of offers to international students.

This website is awesome. I am a Ph.D. aspirant of some other domain, but as I was searching for some Ph.D. information for my area, I found this website, and this is cool. Actually, I had worked as a faculty for Mathematics for two years, and for almost seven months I have been teaching GRE/GMAT/SAT Quant and Verbal so that I can feel the connection with Mathematics. I wish you all best of luck for the results, and if you don't mind, I can hang out with you guys at times when I feel depressed. This process is tiring, and so it's nice to have some company. Bye.

Not sure how many people are doing applied math (I applied only to schools with a dedicated applied math department), but I received an interview request from a prof at the University of Waterloo.

Probably U Washington and Stanford ICME are the first to release decisions for applied math, but I'm not feeling too confident about those schools...

Unofficial - just an email telling me that the department has recommended me for acceptance. FYI - Domestic applicant and interested in applied stuff

I expect so? I assume you're talking about the post on the gradcafe.
I don't see any reason anyone would anonymously lie about being rejected. And since Princeton/MIT/Stanford sent out their first acceptances they now probably have some idea of how long a waiting list they need to keep.

35 that much? I see that there are only 7 or 8 enrollment, and I don't believe anyone would decline Pton's offer......

Yeah, plus 6 on the waitlist. A lot of them likely have offers from other prestigious places as well so I would expect a lot to decline. But on average more than 10 enroll per year.

Well, I think Pton is #1 with a big gap from #2 so maybe nobody would decline...seems I am wrong

Usually there are 25-30 offers and 10-15 accept. I think it'll be a bigger class this year though.

Maybe if you don't have well developed research interests. For instance I would rather go to Chicago than Princeton (I mean, I'd probably be rejected by both, but given the choice...)

Not sure what you mean by "well developed research interests". But it is true that some of the top universities for mathematics are weak in certain areas. For example, there's basically no one who does representation theory at Princeton.

I know a girl who went to Cornell over Princeton for applied math mostly due to the haughty attitude and some academic issues.

How do Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley and Chicago compare for each of analytic and algebraic number theory (separately)?

Is it common that admission notifications for applied vs. pure math programs are sent out at different times? I noticed that everyone in the "Applicant Profile" thread who got admitted to Washington today are on the applied track. Maybe it's just a coincidence, plus I wouldn't expect to be in the first round at any of my dream schools anyway. My status still says: "Submitted".

I'd be okay even getting a rejection from somewhere already because I've been dying waiting to hear back!

I was admitted to this program today and Applied Math is not a "track" at Washington - it is its own separate department, with separate course requirements and very different qualifying exams (for example, real analysis is not even on the quals as far as I'm aware). At other schools like UCLA there is no such differentiation between applied and pure math, and you apply within the same department.

Oh wow, I see that now! I was looking for a distinction on the Math Department page, and did not realize that Applied had its own department. I still have some hope :D

I'm an analytic number theorist. I'd say Princeton (Sarnak) and Stanford (Sound, Venkatesh - both former Sarnak students) are at the top for that. The others don't really have "pure" analytic number theorists, though they do have some people who work on automorphic forms and the intersection of algebraic and analytic number theory.

No idea how I'd rank the algebraic number theory groups, though Harvard would be higher, as would Chicago (and Princeton would still be near the top).

Since they cover air tickets, to me this is more like a free trip to Berlin (plus interviews). I wonder if people view open houses the same way...

Wondering if anyone can help me out. On my ApplyWeb page, where it lists all applications using that system (e.g. Stanford, Michigan, UPenn among others), under Stanford it has a new section titled 'Official Document Requests' and an option to 'Order Official Documents' from my current institution. This certainly wasn't here a few days ago and doesn't appear under any of my other applications that use ApplyWeb, and due to time difference I won't be able to call Stanford until much later (if at all before next Monday :( ). I have already sent my official e-transcripts a while back and got confirmation from them over the phone that they had been accessed, so I'm a bit unsure as to what the problem may be. Anyone seen this before? Thanks
