Undergrad Institution: Small State Midwest US (unknown for math)
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Statistics
GPA: 3.82 overall; 4.00 in major
Type of Student: International Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 164 (87%) 11/17/2016
V: 145 (26%) (should've studied harder but I was extremely busy back in fall 2016)
W: 3.0 (17%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 670 (53%) 9/17/2016

TOEFL Score: Waived

Program Applying: Pure Math (Algebra, Number Theory)

Research Experience: Senior thesis in number theory at my home school. Have preprint ready at the time of application. Some other course projects in measure theory and cryptography. No publication.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Few minor scholarships.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored two years at two places on campus.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I will have done almost all math classes at my school before graduation (all undergrad level since nobody here teaches grad level math courses) including Topology, Complex Analysis, Number Theory, Numerical Analysis, Probability and a year sequence in Abstract Algebra, Adv Calc, Linear Algebra and Mathematical Statistics.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I declared my math major relatively late (Spring 2015 or so) and strove really hard to catch up. Hope my diligence will pay off...

Applying to Where: (I was not intended to rank schools in any specific order, it was based on the ranking from US NEWS. However, I like all of these programs. I just wanted to continue doing math no matter where I go)

Far Reach:
Washington Rejected 02/14 via email.
Ohio State Rejected 04/04 via email.
Penn State -> Never heard back.

Reach (hope one of these will like me):
Georgia Replied to my inquiry email said that I was on waitlist and I was resonable to be admitted 3/21. I just let it go anyways.
Iowa Accepted 02/23 via email. ~19k/year TAship. ATTENDING.
Iowa State -> Never heard back.
Oklahoma -> Never heard back.
South Carolina Unofficially Accepted 04/04 via email. 17.5K/year with possible summer stipend $3k ~ $4k. ---> Declined 04/04.
Kansas State Accepted 02/16 via email. 17K/year with summer opportunity. First offer! ---> Declined 04/05.
Louisiana State Accepted 02/27 via email. Waitlisted for funding. ---> Declined 04/04.
Vermont Accepted to MS program 03/05 via email. Waiting to hear about funding. ---> Declined 04/04.

This site helped me a lot prepare for GRE (even the scores sucked) and apply for grad schools. I am here to return a favor. Best of luck to all of you!

Undergrad Institution: State University
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 3.93
Type of Student: International, Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (97%)
V: 159 (82%)
W: 3.5 (42%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 770 (75%)

Program Applying: Applied Math, Computational Math, Statistics, Math

Research Experience: Just a senior thesis
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Graduated first in class
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Graded for a total of 8 classes
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I took my time and read through almost all the webpages available for each program, such as looking through professors' websites and research interests, and current graduate students' CV, etc, in order to get a good idea of the programs and how much chance I have to get accepted. Then I wrote different Statement of Purpose for each program and stated the names of professors I want to work with and why. I figured writing a solid statement is important to stand out among so many equally impressive candidates.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Not much I can think of

Applying to Where:
The list is not in any kind of order. I always found it difficult to rank the schools since there are so many other factors than reputation that matter. Afterall, graduate school is a life-committing event that lasts 4 to 5 years.

University of North Carolina - Statistics
University of Texas - Computational Science, Engineering, and Mathematics
Michigan State University - Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering
Washington University - Statistics/Rejected 1/19/17
University of Illionis - Statistics/Rejected 2/17/17
UCSC - Statistics and Applied Mathematics
UC Davis - Applied Mathematics/Accepted 1/19/17 :D Will hear more about funding in coming weeks
Penn State - Mathematics
UCSD - Matheamatics
UC Irvine - Statistics/Rejected 2/18/17
University of Maryland - Mathematics

Super excited to be admitted off waitlist by UChicago! Now I am most likely to attend, but I am still waiting for NYU Courant.

On 4/12
I decided to attend UChicago no matter what I finally hear back from Courant. It's a wonderdul application season. Even though I got rejected by most of the top programs, at least there is one great program accepting me. Hope this would help applicants in the future!

Undergrad Institution: Big UK, well regarded for maths
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: High 1st class
Type of Student: International

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (97%)
V: 158 (80%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 820 (84%)

Program Applying: Pure Maths PhD

Research Experience: Undergraduate research bursary (similar to REU), currently completing my master's thesis. A couple of essay courses. No publications.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Department doesn't really give any out unless you're top 1/2 in the year
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Previously a teaching assistant for a 1st year course, also acted as a personal mentor for an incoming student
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Currently on a master's course (as is standard in UK before admission to a PhD program) so will have completed 6/7 'grad' courses. Ranked in the top few out of current master's students but not quite top, although ranked 1st/2nd in a few courses last year. Hopefully one strong recommendation, two slightly weaker but still good.

Applying to Where: Haven't really applied to any safety schools so may well end up getting nowhere - but that's more my problem that I don't want to move halfway across the world unless it beats staying in the UK! So most of these are reach/super reach, in no particular order.

Michigan - Accepted - 02/01
Berkeley - Rejected - 02/04
Columbia - Rejected - 01/31
Duke - Accepted - 01/31
Stanford - Rejected - 02/14
MIT - Rejected - 02/14
Chicago -Rejected - 01/27
Toronto - Pending
Oxford - Accepted - 02/10 (will almost definitely attend)

Update: Naturally a bit disappointed (but not surprised) to have been rejected by most US unis, but would never in a million years have expected an offer from Oxford, which I'm really excited about. Otherwise I would have most likely accepted the offer from Michigan, which has a great department. I will probably withdraw my application from Toronto at some point this week. Best of luck to everyone else still in the process - this forum has been a great help!

Undergrad Institution: U.S. Small No-name School
Major(s): Math / Computer Science
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 3.98/4.00
Type of Student: DWM (although I'm part Native American and also a first-gen student)
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 167 (93%)
V: 161 (88%)
W: 4.5 (82%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 730 (67%) (improvement from my 30-something percentile before D:)

TOEFL Score: n/a

Program Applying: Schools with programs or faculty doing combinatorics and/or graph theory

Research Experience:Two REU's, one of which was at my home institution. Also did some smaller research projects with some professors at my university.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Pearson Outstanding Mathematics Graduate Award, 99th percentile on CS MFAT, 30 points on Putnam, Microsoft Imagine Cup US Finalist
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored throughout undergrad. TA'ed for two classes (Topology and "Theory of Equations" which is mostly an intro to number theory course). Was a summer co-instructor and curriculum developer for a summer program.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm just worried about my small school which likely no one knows about and my less-than-stellar GRE Subject scores. Also, since my school is small, there aren't any grad courses in math offered that I could take. Hoping my CS background might give me a slight edge considering the sub-field.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:

Applying to Where: (ordered by application due date)
Emory Accepted! (1/26), still waiting for official acceptance letter (expected on 2/8) and to hear back about funding
UT Austin Rejected (No notification, just went to the website one day and saw I didn't get accepted)
Georgia Tech (ACO program) Attending! (1/24), 19k/26k funding (dependent on summer teaching), invited for visit on 2/24
UI Urbana-Champaign Rejected (2/21)
UC Davis Accepted! (4/13)
UC San DiegoRejected (3/16)
UN-Lincoln Accepted! (2/17)
Rutgers Rejected (4/21)
UC Irvine Rejected (4/17) (Kinda surprised, they seemed interested in me and scheduled an interview. I was sick at the time and they asked me questions about a topic I wasn't comfortable with. This was also supposed to be one of my safety schools x.x)
Northeastern Rejected (4/10) (I wasn't able to make the time they scheduled me for an interview and tried for several weeks to reschedule the interview with no luck. Dunno if I would have gotten in had I had the interview).
UT Knoxville Accepted! (notified via phone call, can't remember exact date)
Waterloo (C&O program) Admitted! (2/3), awarded " full support package" (more details to come in official letter later)
UH Manoa Withdrew application

Undergrad Institution: very small/relatively unknown liberal arts college
Major(s): Math
GPA: 3.8ish
Type of Student: DMW

GRE Revised General Test:
V: 151 (51%)
Q: 161 (79%)
W: 4.5 (82%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 580 (31%) (Admittedly, I was shocked since my practice scores were around 700; no better practice than the real one, unfortunately)

Program Applying: Pure Math PhD

Research Experience: None
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Deans list and other non-distinctive awards
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor for abstract algebra + calc series + diff eq + real analysis, BSM
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: One strong letter (I am very thankful for this!), 6 independent study courses
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:

Applying to Where:

Brown - Rejected 02/07/2017
UCLA - Rejected 02/10/2017
Michigan - Rejected 03/08/2017
Wisconsin - Rejected 02/03/2017
Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) - Rejected 02/21/2017
Illinois (Chicago) - Rejected 03/13/2017
Rutgers - Rejected 03/28/2017
Oregon -Rejected 03/10/2017
Ohio State - Rejected 04/04/2017
Michigan State - Rejected 03/06/2017
Arizona State -
Central Michigan - Admitted (no info on funding) 02/23/2017, 17k TA position offered 03/27/2017, 27k Dean's Research Assistantship offered 04/03/2017

Note: I do have favorites among these though I don't want to categorize by reach/non-reach since each has their own standards and I don't want to discredit any place. I could see myself and others being very happy with any of these depts :D

Note: My GRE subject score is pretty bad and I have no research experience although if I am accepted anywhere then there is hope for many of you out there! :D Will update as good/bad news rolls in!

Note: I am shocked that I was offered a research assistantship since I have no research experience but I am thrilled for the offer.

It would appear that my lack of research experience and my low subject exam score were enough for rejection essentially everywhere on my list although I managed to apply to one graduate school that was fine with offering me their highest assistantship (as far as I am aware). These results can be interpreted however. Good luck everyone!

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: If you exclude a semester, my math GPA is 3.99/4.00. Three graduate classes. Two very strong letters, one letter that is probably pretty positive.

All applications are for math PhDs. I started with almost twenty schools I was going to apply to, but apparently I narrowed it down to six!

Update 4/11: Overall, I am very happy that I will be able to attend my top choice! I finished my paper in progress before results were out, and mentioned this to the universities I was still interested in, so that probably helped.

My applicant profile will be a little vague at points for identity reasons.

Undergrad Institution: One of the top in Australia.
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Statistics
GPA: Not quite applicable. Final Honours mark was >95% Total undergrad weighted average mark about 92%.
Type of Student: International White Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 90-95%
V: 90-95%
W: 90-95%
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 90-95%

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: 2 Vacation Research Projects (I think these are equivalent to REUs). Honours research project.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: University medal, a bunch of other awards and scholarships based on merit.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor/ TA for two years now.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: The coursework during honours would be about equivalent to grad level courses. So about 7 grad level courses done with two courses receiving perfect marks and the rest >90.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Nothing published and no experience in competitions. (I think these are the biggest negatives of my application)

Applying to Where: (In no particular order)
Stanford - Rejected (02/14)
Berkeley - Rejected
Chicago - Waitlisted
Columbia - Rejected
UCLA - Admitted
Michigan, Ann Arbor - Admitted
Cornell - Pending
MIT - Rejected (02/14)
Northeastern - Pending
Oregon - Admitted

Undergrad Institution: Top ten American LAC
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): my school doesn't do these
GPA: 3.86/4 (3.95 math)
Type of Student: Domestic White Nonbinary

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (97%)
V: 169 (99%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 830 (86%)

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Math Ph. D.

Research Experience: One REU at another institution in arithmetic dynamics, paper submitted to top journal. Two ongoing projects at my institution, one in number theory/arithmetic dynamics, one in algebraic combinatorics.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: High honors from BSM, Sigma Xi at home institution.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Grading I guess?
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: One recommender is quite well-known in combinatorics. I took a year off from my institution to do BSM, sit in on/complete the work for a graduate combinatorics class at a top program in combinatorics (taught by the recommender in question). That same program has a close relationship with my institution and is quite partial to us in admissions in the first place.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Reach:
UC-Berkeley- rejected via e-mail 2/3/17
Michigan- First round of admissions announced with no change in status (called 2/14, they said they are still sending out admits)

Matchish(?)
University of Washington- Accepted!!!! (2/14) With tuition waiver, ≥$25,399 11-month TAship, health care. Haven't completely made up my mind, but fairly likely to attend! Declined (4/14)
UCSD- Accepted!!!! (2/28) With tuition waiver, $20,000 TAship (half time first year), $12,000 fellowship (unclear if first-year only), $2500 one-time stipend, health care/tuition waiver. Declined (4/14)

Safetyish*
University of Minnesota (this is the "top program in combinatorics" from above--after meeting with the director of graduate studies, I would be quite surprised if I am rejected) Accepted(2/23), 18.9k/yr TAship, tuition waiver/health care. ATTENDING (4/14)

^ If it is alright, could you please say how much funding Wisconsin provided? I have heard that their funding is really really stingy.

Undergrad Institution: Medium sized state school
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Women's Studies
GPA: 3.98 General, 4.0 in major
Type of Student: Domestic white female

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 166 (91%)
V: 162 (90%)
W: 4.5 (82%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 560 (26%) (I only submitted this to University of Virginia, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Michigan State University, and Notre Dame. In all of these personal statements I took a paragraph to acknowledge that my score was abysmal, explain it away a little bit, and urge them to acknowledge the other strengths of my application)

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: A five week REU regarding Graph Theory and Algebraic Geometry, an eight week REU regarding Ramsey Theory on the Integers, a sixteen week project course in which we statistically analyzed the effectiveness of a tutoring service, and a year long senior research project in Representation Theory. I presented at many different local and national conference. No publications at the time of applying.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Clarence P Gould Honors Society, Who's Who Award, MathFest 2015 and 2016 "Excellence in Student Exposition and Research" Award, President's List for 6/7 reported semesters and Dean's List for 7/7 reported semesters.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I work in the Office of Math and Stats (which involves LaTeXing and organizing math events) and as a tutor in our math tutoring center
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I had a connection at University of Oklahoma and I met people from University of Oklahoma, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, University of Virginia, and Bryn Mawr at JMM, which may have been helpful on these applications. I would also claim to have a very strong personal statement. I took care to demonstrate that I put serious consideration into what makes me a good mathematician and candidate for their program as well as why I wanted to go to their school. I also think it helped that I took tons of math classes and essentially my whole last year were grad classes.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I am involved in Pi Mu Epsilon and I am president of our chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics and established some important events and programs as president. I am also a capable programmer, which I mentioned in my CV.

Undergrad Institution: Liberal Arts Honors College of State School
Major(s): BA in Liberal Arts with a Concentration in Mathematics (Concentration curriculum equivalent to Bachelors in Mathematics)
Minor(s): None
GPA: 3.967
Type of Student: Domestic (United States), Male, White-Latin Mix.

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 160 (76%)
V: 155 (68%)
W: 4.0 (59%)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
Did not report.

Program Applying: PhD in Mathematics, MsC in Mathematics and the Foundations of Computer Science
Research Experience: Currently working on a senior undergraduate research thesis in ring theory.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Multiple President's and Dean's Lists honors for GPA, among other GPA-related recognition. I got invitations from all of the top legit Honors Societies, though I did not accept membership due to the high cost of entering one.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Campus math tutor for a year.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: My school didn't have many resources at all for mathematics majors. There were no graduate courses, no exam prep classes, etc. However, I became a very strong autodidact (something I tried to get good at before entering college) and learned how to get by on my own. I study frequently on my own time outside of classes, and have plenty of experience with proofs.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: None

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Florida Atlantic University - PhD in Mathematics / Admitted (4/3): $20,050 starting in summer.
University of Florida - PhD in Mathematics / Admitted(3/17): $20,370 first four years, $17,370 for the fifth (hopefully last) - Attending!.
University of Illinois at Chicago - PhD in Mathematics / Pending
University of Oxford - MsC in Mathematics and the Foundations of Computer Science / Rejected (3/16) - I thought I had a really strong application, and so did my professors. I applies for the November deadline, and I stuck around this far, which I believe is near the end just before interviews, so I guess I should be honored to have made it this far in applications.

Undergrad Institution: Very Small Unknown University
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Statistics

Type of Student: Domestic White male

Graduate Institution: Rochester Institute of Technology - Online while working full time still
Major(s): Applied Statistics
GPA: 3.33

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 156 (63%)
V: 145 (26%)
W: 3.5 (42%)

Research Experience: None
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: None
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: 3 Years in Banking and Manufacturing Industries - Various Analyst Positions
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: None
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Nothing Special - I am a somewhat non-traditional student. Graduated with a BS in Mathematics in 2 years while having 3 children and working full time.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

REACH
Indiana University Bloomington - Statistical Science - Accepted Into MS with TA 1700/mo will move to PhD after 2nd semester - TA increased to 18,333/year with health and dental insurance - Attending
University of Louisville - Applied Mathematics - Accepted - No funding info yet
University of Memphis - Statistics - Submitted/Pending
University of Missouri - St. Louis - Computational Mathematics - Submitted/Pending
University of Kentucky - Statistics - Accepted - No funding info yet
Will apply to other schools upon rejection of the ones above.

SAFETY
Safety schools don't exist for people with stats like mine. All schools are a reach in my opinion.

Obviously if I can get into a PhD program, then almost anyone can. I have no research experience and never made a deans list or anything like that. I didn't have time during undergrad for extra work and I don't have time now during my Master's so I am wanting to pursue a PhD to spend the 8 to 5 grind that would be at my current job instead on research and scholarship. If I am lucky enough to get into any school then that should give others hope who have stats as low as mine.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions:
Top of my class. Finished my 4-year bachelor degree in only 3 years with 30 math courses because I self-studied the courses way before I took them in my major. Have an exceptional reputation among my professors and colleagues.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs:

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
Self-studied a lot of advanced topics in Pure Mathematics with an emphasis on the Foundations of Mathematics and Mathematical Logic. I read a lot of advanced topics in Philosophy and Logic. Also, I am interested in Computer Science and studied some related theoretical topics. I am a self-taught professional programmer, and I currently work as a software developer at a software company.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:
I went through extreme conditions in the last month before I graduated with financial problems. I was very depressed and was looking for a full-time job immediately after I graduated. I work as a software developer 48 hours a week and have other difficult issues so I literally didn't study nor prepared for any of my standardized tests and just skimmed some material I found on the web before one or two days of the test.

Notes:
It was a very stressful process just to gather up my application, and all the circumstances were against me. I didn't have the financial ability to apply to any school when I graduated. However, I didn't give up and got a job, and although the salary was very humble I did the best of what I could with it. I didn't apply to that many safe schools because it was not my point to just get accepted in any school. I am an International student after all, and me living in the USA will totally depend on the financial aid I receive, since I will not have any financial source except it. The costs of the applications and standardized tests were very very expensive relative to the country where I live. I am even astonished how I got this far. I know that my scores aren't that good, but I really couldn't do better than that; I didn't have any time to study. I still didn't lose hope, and if I get rejected everywhere then there is nothing I could do for it. I will not get into the master's program at my home institution because it is not worth the time and money. Anyway, I will continue to pursue my passions whether I get accepted or not.

Retrospective:
I was approaching the limit of my financial ability, so there was nothing more I could do about my applications. I still don't regret that I didn't apply to safer schools, my point was not to take many risks in a foreign country. If I were accepted, then I would be fully dependent on financial aid, and literally, there wouldn't be any other financial resources I could depend on. I still don't see it worth enrolling in a masters program at my home institution, since both the level and the quality of the program (especially the courses) are very low compared to many other schools in Asia, Europe, and the USA. Moreover, I have reached a level beyond the program with my self-studies, therefore it would be a waste of time for me. I self-studied graduate level Abstract Algebra, Topology, Geometry, Category Theory, Computability Theory, Mathematical Logic, and Foundations of Mathematics.

Also, I am currently rethinking my objectives in life. Do I really want to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics? I have studied many advanced topics in Philosophy including Philosophy of Mathematics, Philosophy of Logic, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Epistemology, German and British Idealism, and Metaphysics; so why not a Ph.D. in Philosophy? or in Computer Science since I have studied most of the undergraduate level courses and I currently work as a software developer?

What weakened my application most was obviously my scores. In my personal statement, I wasn't specific with my research objectives or even the field I want to do research in, so maybe this was another downside in my application. My recommenders know me very well, and I am sure they wrote me very good recommendation letters. My grades were excellent so no problem here too.

I am not disappointed about being rejected from all the programs I applied to. I am happy with all my achievements and with the opportunity to rethink my future. There are endless possibilities of what I could do next, and I will take the time to think deeply. Congratulations to everyone that got where he/she wanted, and better luck for those who didn't. There is more in life than being accepted in a graduate program.
