GRE Math Subject Test Prep Courses

Post by MathisMath » Wed Sep 21, 2016 8:40 am

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has information about prep courses for the GRE Math Subject Test, e.g., have you heard of any, are they helpful, what is a reasonable price, etc. I can see why someone majoring in math might be reluctant to seek help for a standardized math test. Then again, these boards suggest that it happens.

I have heard of some universities offering free subject test seminars for students, but I don't think a non-student like me would be eligible. I would also have some concerns about instructor competence--given the tricky nature of the exam, a university professor or TA might not know the best way to handle the questions. To me the ideal instructor would be someone who got a perfect or near-perfect score and has remained conversant with the entire syllabus, including all the shortcuts and tricks.

I have found subjectmath.com and am thinking about buying it, but I really do learn best in a classroom environment. Does anyone have any insights or experiences to share? For reference I am in the Los Angeles area, but I am also interested in general comments. Thanks!

There is a user of the forum that certainly qualify as a good instructor. I read he reached 99% on the April exam, he could be lying, but I think not. His name is Bill Shillito, his resume says that he tutors for the Gre Math. http://www.solidangl.es/p/resume.html

He also published a nice series of videos on youtube (link).

There is also Charles Rambo, http://www.rambotutoring.com/. His website has solutions to 3 past GRE exams.

But I think neither of them is in your area .

If you are willing to spend some money on your preparation, I believe the only thing you could do, besides studying, would be to take as many exams as you can. Consider the April and September exams as expensive mock tests for doing better on October  .

You could also email the math department at a local university to see if there are any graduate students that could tutor you for the exam.

UCLA also has a GRE bootcamp here: https://www.math.ucla.edu/~cmarshak/GREWorkshop.html , but it's basically just questions from the previous exams.

I assure you I am not lying. :P

That being said, this school year has been incredibly busy as of late, so I'm currently unable to take anybody on for tutoring, but if you've got a specific question, you're more than welcome to ask it on here or shoot me an email at DMAshura@gmail.com. :)
