9/17/16 Subject Test

This happened today. Any thoughts? I thought it was pretty accessible and on par with the released practice tests. Last October I answered ~40 and got 51%ile. Today I answered 48 and I ran out of time before I could do a few others that weren't too hard.

I answered 51. I read them all, and there were a few that I knew how to do if I had a bit more time. Also a couple that spent way to much time on, only to leave them unanswered. Hoping to 70+ percentile, but will take again in October no matter what. Actually enjoyed taking the exam, just upset that I couldn't attempt them all.

Well this was my first time taking the test and I am senior. I think I attempted ~58. Out of the remaining 8 questions, some of them I was not sure about whereas some of them I did not know how to approach.

I think out of ~58 I have attempted, even if I assume that anywhere from 2-5 might be wrong due to hastening as well as due to pure plain silly error or not reading the question properly, I might be looking at a score somewhere between 50-54.

No clue what that comes out as percentile, hopefully anywhere from 75th-80th. I am retaking it in October as I only had like a month of revision of calculus before taking this.

I felt that the first half of the test was a breeze (I was telling myself, "I'm going to kill this!")...not so much the second half. I'd say I answered 50-55. Definitely taking it again in October. How long does it take scores to be reported? And yes, I hate ETS too; going through this process is probably the most stressful thing I've done in years.. ****Oops, don't want to get in trouble with ETS.

You should not discuss particular problems on the test: if you do, this forum risks being targeted by ETS for violating test security. Regarding the previous post, every test administration uses several different tests (or "forms," as the jargon has it) to prevent cheating.

PS, how do you integrate sin(110x)/sin(x)? I blanked on the test and I'm still blanking. There must be some trick.
A simple trick : sin(110x)-sin(108x)=2sin(x)cos(99x) so if F(n) is the integral with resp to sin(nx)/sin(x) then we have F(n)=F(n-2), and it is 0 since sin(0)=0. If you know some basic fact about dirichlet kernel, you can also find the correct answer in less than 1 minute

Wow the tricks are real. How can anyone think knowing these little tricks is a good measure of your mathematical potential? Unless I guess you think doing mathematics is nothing but finding the right tricks to use in the right situations, which actually now that I think about it isn't totally absurd. But still...

I think they are testing your background in real analysis rather than tricks. As I mentioned before, you can solve it straight forward by writing as complex exponential ( as in the Diricchlet kernel ).

Nice trick! I hope I can come up with something like that on the exam, even if I am not familiar with Dirichlet kernel.
BTW: I think it should be "cos(109x)" in your equation.
