I just received an offer from Yale, and GradCafe has been showing that people received offers at least as early as Jan 13. So it seems they do not send in batches.

Also I am told that as people decline their offers the schools send out more offers, so you shouldn't be sure that you are not admitted yet.

That really early offer was unofficial. It seems like if you didn't get an offer from the schools posted yet chances are looking even slimmer :/

MIT sent the full list for admitted students, delivering the details about the open house.

Agh, so I guess I'll email MIT in the morning and see if I even got the waitlist...

So I wasn't invited to upenn open house, and I'm in the US, does this mean I'm already wait listed/rejected?

Yeah they emailed me back almost immediately that my app is "now ready for assessment" (apparently one of my LORs didn't process immediately) and I'll hear over the next 8-10 weeks. Not sure if that's encouraging or not

I've not applied to Princeton, checking GradCafé for other schools. I still haven't received any reply. EDIT: Profile shared,

Not yet. If gradcafe results from previous years are any indicator we're looking at a Mid-February response--unfortunately.

Got rejected from Princeton. I'm hoping the reason was a mismatch of my interests rather than something deficient in my application. :?

Yeah I'm in the same boat, man. It's unwise to take this stuff personally, as you never know what any school is looking for and Princeton has their choice of just about anyone.
After all, the one acceptance to Princeton reported on GradCafe has lower GPA and test scores than us, so he must have wowed them with LORs and research experience and had contact with a potential advisor. Factor that in with the possibility of only one or two spots opening for (fill in field of interest) candidates and there's nothing to hang your head about. Anyway, looking at your profile, I doubt there was much deficient in your app!

If we didn't even get an invite to UPenn's open house is it pretty much guaranteed that a rejection letter is coming?

One or two spots?? Really?? Where did you get this info from? But I agree with your analysis on the result. It's so disappointed for both of you that Princeton played a game more randomly than MIT:(

Princeton has one of the best math programs in the world (the other one is École Normale Supérieure), so why would you expect it to accept you even though you have perfect test scores and high GPA? For such top programs, actually these data do not mean much, what they value most is your potential in doing outstanding research. I guess the people in the admission committee will read your preprints/publications. They are all big names in the field, and maybe just within a glimpse they can measure your research potential.
No offense, and congratulations on your being admitted to Yale!

Yes, absolutely! There are so many factors they're considering and the crazy stiff competition that there's no reason to take it personally. That post was made within minutes of reading the rejection, so

Which is the top place you're hoping for Fw1812?

Don't get me wrong, I definitely had no expectations of getting into Princeton - much the opposite, in fact! I just meant that it would be nice if the rejection was due to a mismatch of interests (Princeton doesn't seem to have many faculty in my area of interest, and I applied mainly because it's *Princeton*) rather than research potential not being impressive enough, etc. It could of course be anything.

Thanks! Where have you applied, btw? Mind sharing your profile?

Yea, Besides impressive research experience with multiple nice publications, people I know admitted to Princeton all have outstanding performance in math competitions (like IMO,national math competitions in high school, Yau's college math competition in China from a person I know who just got in, and of course Putnam). I think being good at math competitions is also a reflection on research potential, and these people since I knew them I always feel that they are born to be mathematicians. :)

I applied to applied math programs only, so my profile won't give much reference for pure math applicants. I haven't got any reply yet, which has made me very nervous recently.

Might you help future applicants by posting your profile on the other thread? Applied Math at Princeton is as competitive as pure math, if not more, so I wish you the best of luck. Also, please give some more details on your friends' profiles, as I'm sure many of us are very interested in knowing more about it (or if possible, invite him to post his profile here, as it would be a good data point, if he's kind enough). Regards to the competitions, from my view on profiles of people who got in Stanford/MIT/Princeton/Harvard/Caltech, MIT and Stanford are the top two who admits most Olympiad mathletes over the last 2-3 years, followed by Caltech/Harvard (you are probably amazed at the number of those people who currently study at Stanford, especially if you count only the ones with top prizes). From the profiles of current grad students at Princeton, I think Princeton counts it as a tie-breaker factor, but in no way decisive.

I don't really want to share my profile since it is not strong at all. For those people I know, I am afraid that they would not like to do it as they always keep a low profile (it doesn't mean that they aren't kind. Even though they share profiles, these are not copiable for most applicants).

But I can say briefly about what factors they have that may wow the admission committee (will delete them soon so they won't spot my post here :? ):

Thank you so much. I would love to learn more about Person A, specifically the school he went to and the other REU (is it Duluth, or the one at Emory run by Ken Ono?). If that can't be revealed, I hope you can share the venues of his publications, and in what areas he chose when applying to those top school? Thank you so much, and you can delete this info before 24 hrs if you like.

Clearly, a lower bar for domestic applicants is set at OSU, especially in GRE Math:) OSU seems to care more about the regular GRE. The GRE Math score is too low for international, let alone other factors... Congrats to you, airrows!!

Thank you, I took a year off after graduating and I was working full-time, so I didn't get to study for the MGRE as much as I wanted. Every other part of my resume is strong though, I did research for a year and a half, 3 strong letters, and my math GPA is pretty high at least in my opinion. Oh and yea as you guessed I'm domestic.

Number Theory. Emory has a number of top-notch number theorists, such as Ken Ono and Vojtech Rödl. What about you?

I don't know if Emory has sent out all their decisions yet or not, but your profile looks pretty strong. Best of luck!
I am interested in computational math. I will post my profile once I hear from more schools.

Definitely Brown rejection day in the Applied Math department. They must have had an incredible pool of talent this year, or funding is extremely limited.

Just heard back from my first of fifteen schools!

Accepted into Rutgers Math PhD program!
Came with 5-year $27,500 fellowship without TA duties (for two of those years).
Notified by phone; official letter to follow within about a week. Invited to open house on March 4th.

I'll post my details later in the Applicant thread, but My GPA is 3.68, MGRE is 660, and I've participated in HCSSiM, PROMYS, Ross, BSM, JMM, and an REU! :-)

So happy!

Has anyone else gotten a response from Michigan? I'm really worried now since I haven't heard anything from Columbia either and there seem to be admits being sent out these past few days.

Looks like somebody got waitlisted by Columbia. I guess I can expect a rejection letter any day now.
