Undergrad Institution: Small US Liberal Arts School
Major(s): Mathematics (BS), Computer Science (BA)
Minor(s): none
GPA: 3.8/4.0 (approximately, set to graduate magna cum laude)
Type of Student: Domestic Male, half-Asian, half-Caucasian

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (99%)
V: 170 (98%)
W: 4.0 (52%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 810 (82%) -- not bad for only having 8 weeks of real analysis.

Program Applying: Statistics

Research Experience: REU @ University of Nevada, Reno, Statistics. 10 weeks in 2014. There was a conference held at the university which I went to, and the project was presented (not by me, I didn't go) at another conference
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: A ton of tutoring, teaching at a robotics summer camp
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:

Applying to Where:
Columbia - Stats, top choice, I met the admissions director for the masters program at my REU.
NYU Stern - Stats
Yale - Stats -- Rejected (2/2), recommendation for Master's program
  1. Yale - Stats, 1yr Masters program -- Admitted (2/4). No surprises there, but I will likely decline it.
Texas A&M University - Stats -- Admitted (1/29), 20k/yr (non-teaching) + tuition. Waiting to hear back from the last two.

eagerly awaiting results.

Undergrad Institution: University of California
Major(s): Math
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 3.57/4.00 overall, 3.75/4.00 math
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (98%)
V: 159 (81%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 740 (68%)

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: Senior thesis, reading project, paper published and talked about it
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Deans list a few quarters
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Grader, tutor
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Very good fit at a few places, very clear research plans, some of my letter writers know the POIs, four grad classes
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I took one math class P/NP for some silly reason.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Yale - Rejected (1/21)
Rochester - Admitted, TA (1/26)
UC Santa Cruz -Admitted, fellowship (2/2)
UC San Diego - Rejected (3/4)
Duke - Rejected (2/19)
Washington - Rejected (2/22)
Purdue - Admitted, TA (2/4) Will attend.

Afterward (3/12): I got into the university I really wanted to. Purdue is a fantastic school and I had a great time at the visit weekend. I wish I got into more schools, but oh well. At least it made my decision easy. To people reading through these and going through admissions process, I know it's scary but it isn't the end of the world. You will most likely get in somewhere. There were a million things I could have done differently, but I don't think they would have affected the outcome too much. There is a huge element of chance. It's simple: number of applicants>number of spots. They have to pick some people to reject. It is unhealthy to think about what you could have done differently. You would excel at any school most likely. There are just only so many spots.

Undergrad Institution: State school - University of Texas System (only has Master's program)
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): None
GPA: (at the time of applying) 4.0/4.0
Type of Student: Asian Male International

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 168
V: 145 (I know, it's even smaller than epsilon)
W: 3.0 (composition under short time limits never is something I enjoy. I love writing about math subjects though)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 890 (94%) (it's a good day)

TOEFL Score: Waived for studying in the U.S. (some schools still require but I didn't apply to those anyway)

Program Applying: PhD Pure Math (analysis) (may change to do something between applied and pure)

Research Experience: 3 summer schools in mathematics (PCMI, Notre Dame, PIMS), 1 workshop in Bioinformatics (New Hampshire). I wish I had done an REU, but I couldn't apply. No senior thesis (For personal reasons, I was super worried about my phd application during the fall semester so I couldn't concentrate on the thesis; I had talked and decided a topic with my professor, though. I think that helped a bit.)
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Top 200 putnam, previous high school olympiad competitions, lots of scholarships from my institution including an award for best sciences undergraduate student
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor for 2.5 years, Grader for a CS class for 1 year
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: My department is of medium-sized, so I know my adviser and people in the department very well. Therefore, I could take any math courses I liked. Several graduate courses (around 7), including sequences in analysis and algebra. I know all of the professors very well, one is my Putnam coach, one is from my country and has supervised many successful graduate students (I was lucky), and one is very active and well-known in the field. The third professor has some connections to some schools I apply, which I believe is a plus.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: In my personal statement I specifically mentioned research areas and professors I would like to work with.

Applying to Where: (in alphabetical order, I didn't apply to any top 10 schools. Also, my financial situation doesn't allow me anyway. I don't really regret that, as I understand my ability. Having said so, all of the schools I applied have the areas and the professors I am particularly interested in. Getting accepted to any one would be awesome to me. In the end, hard work matters, right?)
Ohio State - Admitted (2/17)
Penn State - Admitted (2/1) (TAship + small bonus)
Rice - Got an email from the director asking if I was still interested in the program (2/11). Sadly, I had to say no.
Rochester - Admitted (1/22)
Texas A&M
Vanderbilt - Admitted at the Interview (2/9)
Washington U St. Louis - Admitted (2/12). Invited to Open House on 4/1.

This website has been a lot of help, so I'm finally glad to be posting my results here!

Miscellaneous Points: The application process is a very stressful one and throughout my application term, me and many others stressed immensely about the GRE subject test. As you can see, my percentage wasn’t great but I still have gotten into a great school, which I will attend. I have realized that graduate admissions committees look at EVERYTHING. If you don’t have a great GRE score, it may not matter if you have excellent grades in high level courses to back it up, as well as good letters. I worked very hard in my undergraduate classes to get good grades and built solid relationships with my professors, whom I asked to take reading courses with. This was fairly easy at a small liberal arts school. I got great letters of recommendation because of this, and also prioritized taking advanced courses whenever possible. These are things that are very much in your control as an undergraduate and can make the GRE process much less stressful. This is just my belief, and I realize yours may differ but the best advice I can give is to take graduate classes as an undergrad and build good relationships with your professors early on. Advanced coursework and strong letters stand out in any application and can be sought out from early on in your undergraduate career, greatly benefitting you later. You should never NOT apply because of a bad GRE score, people know there is more to you than that and if you’ve worked hard and are motivated, people will want you to join their program.

Grad Institution: Public Foreign (Top research center in the country)
Major(s): Pure Mathematics Master
GPA: 3.70/4.00 (Converted)

Type of Student: International White Male

GRE Revised General Test:(Listing approximately)
Q: ~ 85%
V: ~ 55%
W: ~ 15%
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: ~ 65% (October 2013)
(At the time I thought this was a bad score, so I decided to not apply for Fall 2014 and to enroll in a M.Sc in my country and wait two years to apply for the PhD with a higher score. Did not go as planned of course)
M: ~ 35% (October 2015)
(I was aiming to score more than 75% the second time. In all my practice tests I ended in the 800's, but I only did a few ones a week before the test. I guess some days are bad ones. Since I have already sent only the second one, I decided to not send the first one since It could reflect a decrease on my mathematical abilities (It was only a bad day though). Do not let a bad math subject test score change your mind on applying, some places know that it is not the most important thing. There is always hope!)
TOEFL (iBT): : (105 = R26/L29/S26/W24)

Program Applying:All Pure Math (Analysis Concentration)

Applying to Where (Canada): (Listing in alphabetical order)

McGill University -Pending as of (04/24)
Toronto (University of)-Decision Made on (04/8) (*)

Post-April 15 I am posting this very late (I am still impressed that one US app still pending by now), but since this site helped me a lot throughout this process, I want to return the favor to future applicants and let them know that you can end in one of your top choices, even if you failed in the math subject. I am very happy with my final decision, It was a hard one but I think University of Oregon is a great place and I have a couple of potential advisors that I really want to work with.

However, I need to do an important comment. I feel quite robbed by the Canadian universities mostly by McGill and Toronto. On the first one they insist that I never sent my TOEFL scores, but I checked twice with the testing agency and they assured me McGill received the scores. (*) As for Toronto, they did not bother to let me know what was the decision made, they only posted "Decision Made" on the website and have ignored my emails since then . I have the impression that Canadian universities do not accept a significant amount of international applicants, so everyone reading this might want to consider spending their money on Canadian application fees.
