Undergrad Institution: Small SUNY School
Major(s): Mathematics, Computer Science
GPA: 3.6/4 Math, 3.7/4 Computer Science
Type of Student: Domestic, Male, Minority

Grad Institution: Same school
Major(s): Mathematics (Masters)
GPA: 3.4/4

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 160 (78%)
V: 161 (87%)
W: 4.0 (56%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Did not take.

Program Applying: Mostly pure and leaning heavily towards algebra/number theory, though some of the schools I have looked at have interesting looking applied projects ongoing as well. All for PhDs.

Research Experience: I have done two REUs (one in machine learning and one in numerical analysis), and I have been doing research with a professor at my school for a few years. .

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: I am a graduate assistant for my program (they only have 5 out of the roughly 40 students), and I received the departmental graduate award for algebra. Also, the poster I presented from the second REU received a presentation award.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I have been tutoring for 3 years, and I am currently grading for a swing-class (cross-listed as a graduate and undergraduate).

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I am in the CSTEP/McNair program. This likely will not help directly with admittance, but some schools accept application waivers from students in these programs, so I can apply to more schools than I otherwise could.

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 165 (90%)
V: 160 (85%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:

Program Applying: Applied Mathematics/Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Research Experience: 1 summer REU at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (culminating in a talk, poster, and preprint), 1 summer at a NOAA laboratory (culminating in a talk and preprint), and 2 semesters as a graduate research assistant (presenting at two conferences this winter and submitting a paper for publication this spring).

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Math tutor for five semesters (did everything from online, face-to-face, and large lecture tutoring up through Diff. Eq.) and T.A. for atmospheric dynamics course.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I know some of the professors at UW. One of my former teachers also has a few connections at Courant and Brown. My primary recommender holds a degree from Princeton and is well known in the oceanographic community. I'm hoping that completion of two Bachelor's and a Master's in 4 years has some merit to it.

TOEFL Score: (116 = R30/L30/S27/W29)

Program Applying: PhD in Pure Math/Applied Math/Statistics/Financial Math

Research Experience: Master's thesis: On a pre-published numerical method in Mathematical Finance. 6 month research; decent, nothing great, no significant new results.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Scholarship for Master's studies from a well-known research school near the university.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Took some classes on Linear Algebra and Big Data in the company I was working in. (I'm not sure if I should mention this. I have no official records except for my employment letter.)
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm basically trying to shift to (pure) Math. I hope the lack of UG math classes and poor GRE Math scores will not hurt me too much. Also, my grad classes were more applied than pure.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Work experience of 1.5 years, implementing machine learning algorithms for big data.
Recommendations: One strong, one okay, one weak.

Applying to Where: (Tentative (have to significantly shorten this), not mentioned implies Math)

Berlin Mathematical School, Germany
MIGSAA, Scotland

Unknown:
Michigan S - Stat
Toronto - Stat
Alberta - Mathematical Finance
Stevens - Don't care. Had applied late, that too because no application fees.
U Edinburgh, Scotland - Stochastic Analysis

I had applied to a LOT of universities, partly because of my unconventional background, and partly because I just started panicking midway and applied to wherever I could. I received my first admit only after April 15. Nevertheless, I'm happy that I cracked something. The group's interests matches my quite closely. The empty bank balance hurts though.

This website has been a boon to me in many ways. Hopefully this information will be helpful to someone. All the best! Cheers!

Undergrad Institution: Private Research top 50
Major(s): Applied Mathematics
Minor(s): Sorta physics but idk if I'll ever get around to declaring it...
GPA: 3.94 (UG) 4.00 (math & physics)
Type of Student: domestic female

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (98%)
V: 161 (89%)
W: 4.0 (56%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 740 (68%) (I am actually really happy with this. I knew it was going to be the weakest part of my application but I think this can keep me in the mix)

Program Applying: Pure math - I am looking to study mathematical/theoretical physics.

Research Experience: REU in computational biology (I switched from BME to math during my sophomore year) and an REU at a top 25 math program. I've had two research projects at my own university, one modeling malaria infection with stoichastic PDEs and my current one is in quantum chaos.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: I guess none really, obviously deans high honor roll. And then some conference academic recognition awards (see below).
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I've been a grader and a TA since my sophomore year for numerous math, phys, and systems bio courses.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Well I'm a female so that helps. I've been using two of my letter writers since my sophomore year and I believe they are doing a tremendous job. I've also taken a graduate class every semester since declaring math and maintained a 4.0.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Not sure how relevant it will be on some of my applications but I am also a two sport varsity athlete (soccer and track & field). I've also been heavily involved in leadership roles through greek life. I also hold a job in the department of relations and development so I'm friendly with some important people.

Applying to Where: Weeee the fun part.

Undergrad Institution: Small liberal arts, not well known
Major(s): Mathematics, Computer Science
Minor(s):
GPA: 3.92 (4.0 major)
Type of Student: Domestic male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (98%)
V: 164 (94%)
W: 5.5 (98%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 740 (68%) This, along with my obscure school that doesn't offer grad classes, is what weakens my application. I'm hoping my score isn't so low it will automatically disqualify me, as I believe the rest of my application has notable elements.

TOEFL Score: (xx = Rxx/Lxx/Sxx/Wxx) (if applicable)

Program Applying: All pure math PhD, except for foreign masters, focus on algebraic topology

Research Experience: One REU at a small California state school with a paper submitted, second REU at Cornell with a YMC presentation
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Departmental awards
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Math tutor, have experience tutoring upper division courses
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Math in Moscow for a semester, 3 independent studies of graduate material my senior year (I had no other options at my university)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: One well known recommender from Cornell, glowing letter from my academic advisor, a letter from Moscow from a professor doesn't know me too well but should nonetheless be positive

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Trying to hedge my bets by applying to a lot of schools, since students from my school rarely breach top 50 schools

MIT - rejected
Princeton - rejected
Stanford - rejected
UCLA - rejected
NYU - withdrawn
Chicago - rejected
Cornell - admitted 2/11 25k TA-ship (upgraded to a 29k fellowship with no teaching duties in the first year) - Attending, was my top realistic choice
Brown - rejected
Penn - waitlisted (inquired via email), withdrawn
UIUC - rejected
Washington - admitted 3/3 18k TA-ship with 5k summer funding
Ohio State - admitted 1/12 18k TA-ship (upgraded to a 24k fellowship with no teaching duties in the first year)
USC - admitted 3/4 22k TA-ship with 2k summer funding
UC Santa Barbara - admitted 3/4 19k TA-ship
Georgia - admitted, awaiting funding, declined
UBC (masters) - withdrawn
Cambridge (Part III Tripos) - rejected, somewhat annoyed because this would be a great program to make up for my background

NSF GRFP - not awarded

Despite all the rejections, I got what I wanted, which is admission to a respected university. Students from my university don't get into good graduate schools, and I am the first person in a very long time to get into the Ivy League. I don't think I'm the best mathematician at my school, only the student with the best resume. Hopefully my professors will be able to send more students to the top 20.

Undergrad Institution: India; very new programme with only one graduating batch before me, but well-known faculty.
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): -
GPA: - 7.6/8; Math GPA: 7.81/8 [I don't think it would be accurate to just divide by 2?]
Type of Student: US citizen but studied in India; Indian ethnicity.

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (99%)
V: 170 (98%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 910 (99%) (October 2015)

TOEFL Score: (118 = R30/L30/S30/W28)

Program Applying: Pure Math, with an interest in analysis and probability theory

Research Experience: One summer project (that began ~8 months earlier) with some research at the end. Nothing publishable. Ongoing final year research project.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: KVPY fellowship. (An Indian fellowship for students showing an aptitude for research)
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Nothing.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Two famous/somewhat well-known recommenders who know me well; one is my current advisor and the other my faculty advisor for 2.5 years. Plenty of graduate courses (at least in India) like Functional analysis, algebraic topology, measure theory, probability theory, stochastic processes & brownian motion, Galois Theory, commutative algebra, representation theory of finite groups...
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: N/A

Undergrad Institution: Well known liberal art school with a strong math dept (as far as liberal arts schools go ...)
Major(s): Math, Physics
Minor(s): Economics
GPA: 3.95/4.0
Type of Student: Domestic Asian male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (97%)
V: 169 (99%)
W: 4.5 (85%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 820 (83%)

Program Applying: Applied Math mostly (1 Operations Research)

Research Experience: Fairly prestigious applied math REU (RIPS), submitted a paper to a CS conference, got rejected but will resubmit (all too late for the applications), poster presentation; another summer doing physics research at my school and economics research at a think tank, although nothing really came of either; and one summer doing research at a university in India, but again nothing really came of it. Currently writing a physics thesis, but it's heavy on the math (foundations of quantum mechanics).
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Phi beta kappa, dean's list, some school-wide scholarships; highest honors at Budapest Semesters in Mathematics study abroad program
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Been a math TA for the past 4 semesters, very active peer tutor (100+ tutoring sessions)
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: My thesis advisor is well known in his field, but that probably won't help too much for applied math programs. My REU advisor is also decently well known I think. Also took part in Budapest Semesters in Mathematics and did well.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I've taken quite a heavy load of classes for a liberal arts student (took some extra classes a few semesters) and one of my recommenders noted this.

Applying to Where: (All PhD in Applied Math unless otherwise noted)

I think essentially all these schools are reach schools. I figured if I didn't get into any I would do something else for a year and try again.

Caltech - Computing + Mathematical Sciences - Rejected :( 3/31
NYU (Courant) - Waitlisted 2/25 - Admitted! 3/14
MIT - Applied Math - Admitted! 2/4 Committed and will be attending! 27k fellowship over 9 mo.
MIT - Operations Research - Admitted! 2/24
Princeton - Rejected :( 2/16
UCLA - Admitted! 1/21
UC Berkeley - Admitted! 1/31
Stanford - Institute for Computing & Mathematical Engineering - Rejected :( 2/5
Harvard - Applied Math @ the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences - Rejected :( 3/2
University of Colorado - Boulder - Admitted! 1/29
Brown - Admitted! 2/3 (email to check website)
Cornell - Admitted! 2/5
Carnegie Mellon - Algorithmics, Combinatorics, Optimization - Rejected :( 4/12
Georgia Tech - Algorithmics, Combinatorics, Optimization - Admitted! 1/26

I have no idea what my chances are at any of these places, so we'll see how things go :?
