Applying for interim RA positions

Hey guys. With April 15th approaching, I wanted to keep backup options to my PhD waitlists. In the worst case that I don't get an admit, I wish to apply for research assistant positions in US universities, so I can gain experience for a year or so before reapplying to programs. Can you tell me the best way to apply? Should I talk to professors directly or departments regarding this? In your experience which colleges usually accept RAs/interns, and what would be the best way to describe my intent/position to them?
If anyone has applied for such a position below, please let me know as I guess I should start mailing them.
Thanks

I didn't know that was a real thing.

I had a friend who I guess did this one summer during undergrad. She already knew the professor personally from some conference she went to. If you dont have a grad degree I think it would highly depend on who you know and who they know. I would probably try with the professor directly because that is who has the funding.

Another option you could look into is the Department of Energy SULI program. They do it for fall, spring, and summer. They house and pay you pretty decently to do research at national labs.
