I think you can. One way of publishing is to work on class projects and then publishing them in acceptable journals (Dont aim for high CI journals as their rejection style would only make you more frustrated than motivated). I did four projects+one final thesis. I got one published, one rejected while one accepted with changes. However, my tight schedule (working day+evening college) restricted my publication to just 1. However, I am intending to get my half cooked projects and Thesis published before applying for PhD.
