GRE Math Subject test exam?

I recently received my Mathematics GRE subject test score of 650 ( 48%). I have the option to retake the GRE next year October only.

Should I be reporting this score to universities where it is not mandatory (but highly encouraged) to submit Math subject GRE scores? I mean will this score weaken my application?

Before this score, I was thinking of applying to universities like Upenn, Penn State etc but feel really nervous about my admission prospects now.

If they say it is highly recommended, I would send it. I think it helps to show you can do what they ask. It is your call though. Also, if the rest of your application is competitive for the schools you mentioned, I think you should still apply to at least some of them. Not all schools place that much weight on the GRE. You might want a few backups, but you should still reach.

I wouldn't call 48th percentile "miserable". It's not stellar, but it still means you did better than almost half of all applicants wanting to go into grad school in math in the US. That's really not too shabby.

The 48% percentile is good to some universities. Choose wisely though. You may not be able to get in a top university with that though.
