Science background in Applied Math?

I'm applying to an Applied Mathematics program and was hoping my background in astrophysics and other sciences, in addition to a mathematics degree, would strengthen my application. It seems logical to me that some amount of knowledge and skill in the field of application would be helpful. But a recent post in another topic implied that this was irrelevant, that applied math was still just math and experience in the applied field would be useless. For instance, they said that a background in physics would not be at all useful in mathematical physics. This doesn't make sense to me. Would anyone else like to weigh in on this issue?
