Changing fields from mechanical engineering to pure math.

I am a mechanical engineering undergrad. I want to change fields to pure math for my masters/phd.

I will have taken courses in algebra, topology, functional anaysis and real analysis by the end of my four years.

My question is: can I even switch in this manner? I have been given to understand that only switches between closely related fields, like Physics and electrical engineering, are allowed.

Thanks in advance!

Usually the background needed is a year of real analysis, abstract algebra, and linear algebra. You may not be as prepared as major, but you are definitely have the background (especially if you are applying to masters programs) and ME is a related field!
