GRE Revised General Test scores, are these okay?

Post by ppham27 » Tue Apr 23, 2013 11:23 am

I'm looking to apply to top Math/CS programs next fall. I just got back my GRE scores.

VR: 164 (93%)
QR: 170 (99%)
AW: 4.0 (49%)

I get the impression that they are mostly used as a cutoff. I am mainly concerned about the AW score. Is it too low? I could probably stand to bring my VR score up as well since I was scoring 165+ on practice tests, but it's probably high enough already that it doesn't matter.

I get the impression no one even looks at these scores now. That is, as long as they also require the GRE Subject Test in Math.

Thanks for the reply. I'll focus on studying for the subject test, then.

If the program does not require subject scores, then the GRE General is extremely important. If they do require subject scores then n there's not much importance put on the GRE General since majority of the math is high-school level. But you may need it if you want to qualify for university fellowships.

I remember reading on Stanford's site that the typical fully funded grad student has 4.0 for writing. So you're fine. :D

I got worse scores than you in both writing and verbal, and I got into some top ten programs. My subject score also sucked.

All right thanks for the reassurance, everyone. I can focus on prepping for the subject test, then. I've already been out of undergrad for 2 years, so I have a lot of review to do.
