Schools that accept you without funding

Post by avisottda » Thu Apr 11, 2013 11:18 am

I think it would be useful for future applicants to list the schools that offer you admission without any mention of funding. I had no idea and thought schools would generally provide funding for PhD candidates (at least in STEM). I will name some of the notorious ones from GC. These are the schools that expect some students to pay for the full tuition and living expenses out of pocket for 5 years.

University of Miami
University of Denver
University of Tennessee Knoxville
Northeastern University
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Colorado School of Mines
University of Houston

Stony Brook AMS(Applied Department)
NYU Courant
UIC

I believe the last two(NYU and UIC) may have stopped giving unfunded admits since last year(2012).

Stony Brook Applied Math.

When I emailed them about this they encouraged me to attend and look for funding during my first year.

I'm going to echo University of Tennessee Knoxville. When I went to visit, their coordinator told me that she thought I would definitely receive funding and the department seemed very impressed by my application. I have yet to hear about funding. Guess you can't believe everything you hear!
