GRE Subject vs General GRE

I am curious, just how important is the quantitative part of the general GRE? When I was interested in going to grad school in economics instead of math, the Quant sections was very important with top schools pretty much requiring a 169 or 170 for admissions. But for math we have the subject test. Obviously the math subject test is very important but is it also critical to get a high score on the quant GRE or will a good score on the math subject test be sufficient to make up for a lower quant score?

I am a top student at a small state school hoping to go to a top 20 school for my PhD in pure math.

From what I've heard on these forums and Gradcafe, the general consensus is that a very high score on both exams won't help your application much, but scoring extremely low on either of them will definitely put you at a disadvantage compared to other applicants.

They honestly don't seem to care too much about the General GRE, so long as you don't completely bomb the Quantitative. And that's damn near impossible if you're studying math.

Treat the subject GRE like it's necessary but not sufficient to be admitted to a top 10 grad program. Because it essentially is (granted, there are exceptions).

I was under the impression that the general GRE was completely worthless and only required due to university regulations.
