I have been offered a TA-ship of $11,570 (along with something called the TA top-up of $1,000) for 8 months at UBC. They have also talked about an RA-ship of $10,000 for 12 months... but the problem is that this amount is subject to change depending on the availability of research grants of individual faculty members at UBC. Anybody else facing similar doubts in their offers? And should it happen that there is a dearth of around $1,000 - $2,000 in the RA-ship, does anyone have any idea whether I'll survive in Vancouver or not? (my tuition fees will be covered by the Faculty Graduate Fellowship ($4349.15) but the student levy fees won't be covered, and they also have not talked about the health insurance thing but apparently that is just a premium of about $13 per month). Any suggestions, ideas etc. will be welcome... as I'm completely naive about Canada.

I also applied to Vandy and have heard nothing. UK will admit a significant number of people in the next two weeks I imagine.

Yeah I am pretty sure that Vandy has sent out preliminary offers (saw some of grad cafe) but I'm not sure. I already have a pretty decent offer from a third school, it is just the wait and not knowing is killing me! I hope that your right about UK though, as I need information! :D

Just as an aside, is there any particular reason you think that about UK?

I have got exactly same offer from UBC but this is for Master's, while I guess that you have a PhD offer. However I am also concerned about the same thing, whether I will be able to meet all the expenses there or not! Are you getting full tuition waiver or partial? You may like to look at this link, may be helpful. https://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-stu ... udent-fees

They have told me that my tuition fees will be covered by the Faculty Graduate Fellowship of $4349.15 and I am hoping that this means it's a full tuition waiver. I am also a lot worried... just in case there is any dearth of funds, I shall be in no position to support myself through personal funds. But UBC is my dream school, and I'm trying to collect information about the cost of living there... so hopefully, everything will be fine :)

In fact same Institute (different center though) :D . I am waiting for decisions from Caltech and UIUC. However, UBC is one of my top choices.

How did Cornell state their reject letters from this past week, for those who received one? Also, any news on Berkeley, Caltech, or Penn decisions (in general, not just that you know of one person who has heard back)?

Judging from the "cost of living" portion of the UBC website I think that international students' tuition is about 7.000$ and that the fellowship mentioned covers the 4.000$ while an international tuition award covers the other 3.000$. Whether you will receive this award will be probably mentioned in your offer. I think that RAs depend on the professors that you are interested in working with, so if you have already contacted (or been contacted by) any of them, it would be a good idea to ask them about your concerns.. As for Vancouver, I think that you should apply for the UBC housing as soon as possible (even before deciding on whether you will accept the offer or not) in order to be high on the waitlist for on-campus housing..

I got an email from Laugesen at UIUC this morning saying they intend to offer a TAship and tuition waiver, "with details coming next week." A friend of mine received a similar email around the same time. This appears to be the start of the first wave.

I'll quote the body of the email:
On behalf of the Graduate Faculty in Mathematics, I regret to inform you that your application for admission to the Ph.D. Program in Mathematics has not been approved.

Since the number of students who can be accepted is limited and the overall quality of applicants is very high, it is not possible to accept many excellent students who are interested in coming to Cornell.

We appreciate your interest in Cornell and wish you success in continuing your studies at another university.

Sincerely,
Melissa Totman

So, basically this means that next week all UIUC accepted get official offers ???
Those with unofficial offers from before and those who haven't heard anything yet ???
That would be great ...

Thanks! The previous email was from a professor who asked me to consider Illinois and expressed interest in working together. Laugesen mentioned that email in the one from today, but addressed admission and funding explicitly this time.

So, could you please tell me the exact wording used in your offer letter? Did they say "Your tuition fees will be covered by the Faculty Graduate Fellowship" or did they mention that it will be only partially covered? Mine is the former wording with the amount mentioned being $4349.15, and that is very odd, since most PhD students receive full tuition waiver and this seems barely more than half the amount.

Looking forward to your reply, as this is really worrying me. And also, I emailed the grad coordinator Lee Yupitun, and expect her email sometime late night tomorrow. Will let you know what she says.

"A Full Teaching Assistantship. This pays $1 1,133 and a TA topup of $1,000 for the period from September 1,
2013 to April 30,20 14. Typical duties are 12 hours per week of tutoring and marking. For students who have
completed the course Math 599 and obtained departmental approval, the TA duties may be teaching a class.
This assignment brings a higher salary: $7,250 per academic term.
A Research Assistantship in the amount of $10,000 per year from September 1, 2013 - August 3 1, 2014,
provided you make satisfactory progress. All funds for the Research Assistantship will come from individual
faculty members' research grants and are therefore subject to the availability of funds.
A refund of your application fee in the amount of $153.
The total amount from UBC will be $22,286.
You will also receive an International Partial Tuition Scholarship of $3200 per year which reduces your tuition
fees to almost what a domestic student pays. The tuition fees are currently $7640 per year and subject to change.
This does not include student levy fees."
This is what I have got. I think that everything else except tuition fee is same for both of us!
BTW, Lee Yupitun is 'her'??? I was continuously addressing this person as 'sir' in all the e-mails!!!!!!!

Oh OK... so you are receiving that International Tuition Scholarship. Good. Nothing of this has been mentioned in my offer letter. I don't know what to think of this... because the way they have put it, "your tuition fees will be covered" makes me feel that they might have made a mistake and actually meant coverage of the full tuition fees.

Usually the grad coordinators are female, and yeah, you had best start addressing Lee as "Ma'am" and "her" if you wish to get quick and helpful responses to your queries

I think realistically I only have chances for Brown, Washington, and Wisconsin.
I have a back-up plan, and I am a lot more relieved compared to before.
But it will be still sad if I don't get any ticket for higher education next week.
I guess I need to grow up more.

I think this message is just telling us that the system is being updated. Once done, the supplemental form link will have the acceptance/rejection letter. If not, my guess would have been that they would already have rejected those who didn't get the now infamous request for further information.

I can't speak for anyone else, but UMD's site is back on-line and I have no admission decision update ( or at the very least, no rejection).

The optimist in me assumes that no rejection + no request for additional information means they didn't even need to vet me and I'm safely accepted.
