I guess my biggest setback is that I haven't taken a lot of advanced math courses related to differential equations and probability (areas I hope to do research) simply because my school doesn't offer them, even at the graduate level! We do have ODE's PDE's, calculus based probability but courses like functional analysis, measure theory, are still in the works. My institution's PhD program is catered to research and so the courses offered are very general and I guess you learn the other stuff on your own.

From what I know Cornell has already sent a couple of admits. Manyfolds has gotten one. Did you contact Cornell about this?

As for Columbia APAM, I believe that they have yet to send out their offers.

Good luck to you too! :) I only applied to 4 PhD programs and 5 master programs as a back up plan. If I don't get accepted to Cornell, I will most likely attend Carnegie Mellon. If I hear from Columbia APAM and get rejected by Cornell, I might have to deliberate between CMU and Columbia. I'm not thinking about the master programs I applied to anymore since I've already gotten a PhD admit

What school are you most intent on attending?
Ah I see. I think in the class offering department, there's really no beating a top ivy. Between advanced undergrad and grad classes, I've taken Topology/Algebraic topology, differential/Riemannian geometry, Real analysis/measure theory, probability theory, etc, as well as some advanced algo classes cross listed with the comp sci department. Truly I feel very fortunate to be able to have had this kind of training. Definitely it would be much harder for you to have learned all this on your own than for me with all the support of a structured program, but I'm sure the admissions officers take this into consideration. And of course, it's tougher for you as an international, and that's really unfortunate, as I think a lot of international students are extremely hard working and well prepared for graduate study. I definitely think your best bets are private schools (which I see you've applied to/gotten into - CMU is great for applied math), as for public schools, funding internationals is definitely a more of an issue...

Yes, I've heard about Manyfolds' admission, based on my impression I thought he/she had a strong background, so definitely well deserved. I'm most interested in hearing back from Caltech, because of a specific research group that I'm interested in. Honestly I don't know if I would prefer Columbia to Berkeley, so it might end up being a choice between those two. Also I did ask Cornell, but their answer was kind of a vague "we are still deliberating, wait and see", so I don't really know what to make of it...
Yes you are quite right, nothing beats an ivy when it comes to teaching. and I did mention this in my personal statement...a huge reason as to why my institution is top ranked is due to research. we have a lot of research programs for undergrads (1 year long, during the 2nd or 3rd year or both) and that was probably my arsenal as I have a journal and conference publication. But that's about it and probably my math GRE score despite my poor pure math background!

And yes you are right again, it was a deliberate decision to apply to mostly private universities because of funding. ;) What are your research interests btw?

Would anyone think it is poor taste, at this time of great anxiety, to start a decisions thread in which people can comment on open house visits, relative strengths/ weaknesses of departments and campuses, etc... to help people decide among schools?

I think it's a good idea. The sooner people WITH offers decide, the sooner people on wait lists will know where they stand. And a nice solid discussion would probably help.

You should go ahead, I am happy that some people have already gotten good admits.

I started the day with my second rejection btw. I also have an unofficial rejection(got an email from poi that telling me that unfortunately he wont have the funds to support a student in the following 2-3 years and otherwise I would have been accepted, well at least he was kind enough to take time to tell me all that).

Has anybody heard back from Canadian schools yet? I've only applied four that my advisor recommended to me(McGill, Toronto, UBC, Waterloo), so I'm a little uneasy. My letters of recommendation were a bit late, if that hurts my application, but I think they arrived before anybody looked at my application.

I guess for reference I didn't write the GRE since none of the Canadian schools require it, my math GPA is 3.6-3.7, I've only had A's and A+'s in pure math courses, as well as two summers of research and some recommendations from two really strong professors who I know pretty well, and a third from the department chair. I also won a departmental award or two. However, my overall GPA is 3.2 since my first two years were really screwy and I still get the odd B or C in applied math courses.

according to grad cafe, there have been some admits to UBC and waterloo. I applied to Toronto too but still haven't heard back either.

Why should be poor taste anyway ?
I think it's an important step to think about the school you want to chose.
And if someone doesn't have an offer (like me :( ), then that doesn't mean you shouldn't think about it.
Also, it may help some of those wait listed outside, so it's actually a good thing for them too. :D

I agree! You should totally start this thread :P ! I have not gotten in anywhere though but this thread would do nothing but help us in the process.

Yeah this kind of sucks. I understand that the universities are taking their time to make the best decisions possible but the wait is so disconcerting!

I think it's safe to say that UIUC will start next week.
That's just mean. Last year at this time they had already announced their results.

If you check your app status, Maryland AMSC claims it will mail all their offers. don't know whether they mean email or old school mail

Last year's AMSC admits were emailed on Feb 22 according to GradCafe results; one would think the same is true of this year (email-wise, not date-wise). Otherwise, I'll be keeping an eye out for the UMD horse-and-buggy in the next couple of weeks :)

Random question: At what time did UCSD email you today if you were admitted today? I'm worried that I've been rejected, and I thought it was a reasonable bet I'd get in. It seems like they do a wave of emails at 2:55am or something from what I've heard, but I'd like to make sure.

So UIUC wants us to register for the open house by March 15, which is ~2 weeks from now. I think for us to get some decent plane ticket prices we have to buy them relatively soon, so my bets are on Monday, if not the weekend.

Yeah but that's because I met grad director at conferences and visited in december. But any offers that have been already made have nothing to do with the main pool of applicants (and you can probably disregard those people's stats), so no need to stress! :) when i said "my bets are on Monday" I meant that I think all the main offers will go out on that day just because it gives people a reasonable amount of time to decide if they can go to the open house or not.

Got four rejections, Maryland didn't send me the 'second round' question, one application was left incomplete because of a problem with the recommendations. That makes it sex rejects, no admits.

They actually sent me two emails. One informing me of admission and one informing me of my fellowship. This is what the 2nd one said:
In addition to the previous email I just sent out to all students who will receive an
offer from us, I want to let you know that the Admission Committee ranked you
as one of our top students and would like to offer you the GAANN fellowship
for 2013-14 academic year. The GAANN fellowship is need based, and provides
tuition, fees, stipend between $18,000-$30,000, and approx. $2,000 for educational
expenses. Check http://www2.ed.gov/programs/gaann/faq.html

Because of this fellowship, I strongly encourage you to communicate your decision
with us as early as possible. Thanks!

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
