Wow I wish I could have a day a like that during decision season.

So still no real action regarding decisions. Would this be a correct assertion?
When do you guys think that decisions are going to start arriving (more fluidly, at least)? Next week?

A lot of them will come the last few days of January and the first few weeks of February, according to data from past years on grad cafe

We were talking about this earlier in the thread, but has anyone's official GRE scores been checked off at Columbia yet? Mine are still "Awaiting", even though all the other schools have received them.

Why don't you email the school or give them a call ?

GRE will give you a date that they were sent, in case you all are worried that the school never received it. Just look at your online scores, and it will list the date the school received them.

Same here. I think they're just slow in updating.

I sent my scores to UC Davis on the 21st of December, and the school just sent me an email saying that they never recieved them :( I emailed ETS two days ago about it but they still havent responded. I'm tempted to just pay the $25 again. Has something like this happened to any one else?

You guys would not believe how much it helps to know that I'm not the only one who's going insane over this. Because I'm seriously going crazy. I've been checking this site and gradcafe obsessively trying to figure out when I might expect a reply.

does any one receive rejections from Chicago?

BTW, does any one have some idea about whether MIT has already send out all offers?

It's not as strange as you may think.... Last year MLK day, a holiday in the US, was on Jan 16, and decisions came out the following Monday- the 23rd. This year MLK day is the 21st. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a spate of letters tomorrow, then.

yes...the reason I did not pay some attention to MLK day is that from grad cafe and here, Chicago sent out some admission results as early as last year...

me too, I was not productive today, even felt a little bit depressed. It's very tiring to wait. I also saw some people got acceptance email from Northwestern in gradcafe. It made me very unsettled.

is it good when applicants who have decided they will be going somewhere else (even if the full final decision has not been made) tell schools they would like to withdraw their application ?

I would say yes, it is particularly good for the people who are on the wait list for this school.

Follow-up to the conversation about Columbia's ''awaiting'' GRE scores status:
Today I got the following response to my inquiry from about two weeks ago. It's probably relevant for many of you guys too.
We have received your test scores.

We have not yet run the program which matches GRE and TOEFL's to applicants' files. The process may take several more weeks to be completed. The APPLICATION STATUS page will be updated to reflect receipt of those scores when the program has run. If the program has not been run before the department begins to consider applications, your application will be reviewed using the test scores you entered on the application, along with any uploaded copies of your score reports.

I feel confused why there are few results in grad cafe about top schools....for example 3 for mit..2 of them are wailitinglist...only three for Chicago.... does the showing up of waitinglist means all offered were sent out?

I've received that same email from Columbia twice, once before Christmas and about two weeks ago.

I also asked Northwestern about the status of my application and the Director of Graduate Studies responded with this yesterday:

"We have made a first round of offers, but we have not rejected anyone yet
and your file is still active.
A second and final round of admissions will be made in a few weeks."

I bet they are all just either 1) unofficial acceptances sent by professors or 2) acceptances for students who the whole committee knew were going to get in immediately, so they went through the vetting process earlier (i.e. got all the paperwork done for that person). There are simply too few of them on the gradcafe forum for it to make sense that they've already sent out the first wave. Perhaps this is just wishful thinking though.

I can vouch for what apollo said. The people I know who got on a waitlist or an acceptance so far were unofficial ones sent by professors.

I received the same email as well but someone posted on thegradcafe that (s)he was told by the director that (s)he is in a good position on the waitlist, does that mean they already have a waitlist to choose from for the second round of offers ? why would they put us on hold in this case?!!

If the data from previous years is of any indication, it appears that *pure* math MIT applicants who have yet to hear back are unlikely to have made the cut.

That lone Columbia admit on TheGradCafe is somewhat unsettling, too. I'm curious if anyone here has heard back from Columbia?

I don't know whether this will help or not... but I shall state it nonetheless: A couple of days back I had emailed to Barbara Peskin, the graduate coordinator for MIT Mathematics Department. She had replied to me that the applications are still under review... and that I shall hear something from them most probably in March. I don't know what that means, and I guess this might be something applicable only for international applicants... but I thought it would be good to share this piece of information with you guys :) Not that I'm expecting even a waitlisting for myself in MIT, it will surely be a downright rejection. But it may give some of you guys some hope :)

Can't help but disagree. There are hardly any MIT decisions on the forum yet. Looking at last year's submissions to the forum, there were significantly more decisions posted with the first wave. I still believe that these few acceptances are either unofficial or were processed earlier. And to worry about a lone Columbia acceptance I think is a little silly :P

It should be noted that this spring semester started later in the calendar than last year. And additionally, comparing last years acceptances to previous years (like f10,f11 etc), last years' first waves were abnormally early. So it's not crazy to expect the top schools to send out stuff a little later.

The reason I feel hopeless is that some people report waitinglist information....how can waitinglist be available before all offers are sent out..

One way it may work is as follows: So when the selection committee is looking at the applications, it initially makes a sort of classification into: 1) People they are surely going to accept, 2) People who are surely going to be rejected, and 3) People who they are not so sure about... who are somewhere in between (that this categorization happens I know for sure, for I know professors from a few mathematics and statistics departments of the US... they happen to be my college seniors). Out of the 3rd group, they may have sent emails to some people stating that they have been waitlisted... they'll probably have an ordering even within the 3rd group... and according to the way people respond to their offers, they are going to decide what they'll do with the waitlisted applicants.

I should add that one is unlikely to hear any meaningful news from staff members (e.g. graduate coordinator), as they're unauthorized to give out these details. It makes more sense to contact the graduate director/a committee member/professor of interest if you want to see where you stand.
