Does anybody know when schools like Michigan or Cornell will make decisions with regards to pure math? I realize this is all speculative, of course.

I got into Courant, didn't specify Pure vs Applied as far as I remember on the application. (I did not post on gradcafe)

Thanks for replying. I had seen that last year they sent offers at early March and I was hoping that the offers made now were for Oceanic + Atmospheric. I guess they replied earlier this year..

Hi m_s,

I also posted on grad cafe my admission to Courant for Ocean-Atmosphere (but did not specify that it was COAS when I posted).

I was accepted for NYU this morning (New York time); my application was in pure mathematics. :)

(I'm an international student, if that counts for anything.)

Just got a rejection from Brown in response to a scores inquiry:
We received your scores, however, I am sorry to report that your application has been rejected. I am sure that you will be admitted to a good program elsewhere. Best of luck in your future studies.

My condolences atomspatz. Hope you will have an admission from a top program coming soon. I want to ask you if you, on the way, asked about your application status. Also, was your application for pure math?

Confusion!!!! :o
My application to Penn State was declined as they needed a 4-years Bachelor degree, and I have a 3-years. And that rejection I got on 15th Jan. But just now I have got a mail from Prof. G Andrews that they have nominated me for UGF, and he is very 'excited' to know whether I like to consider the offer and come to PSU. I just don't understand!!!!!

Thanks IIes, I'm not too disappointed about this one. My application was for pure. I didn't ask about my decision; the website reflected that they hadn't received my GRE scores, so I asked if they wanted me to resend them.

I don't understand why grad schools like Brown keep you waiting long after they know your decision status. It's really annoying because the longer you hope, the worse the rejection feels.

Those schools don't tell you until they have filled up their class. They don't want to underfill their entering class because that would mean less funding the next year. Overall, though, I would call today a relatively calm admit day.

It was relatively calm indeed. Except for the part where my dream school (NYU) sent some admits and I did not get one. That sucks.
Still hoping for the best though. It aint over till its over man! BTW I think this Friday is going to be pretty hectic! Don't you think?

Yeah, but these people had already been basically rejected, yet the admissions committee did not inform them. I would understand if the admissions committee thought they probably weren't going to accept you but thought your application was decent enough to hold on to just in case they needed to fill in spots. However, this was not the case here.

I was also really hoping for NYU although it was a long shot with my terrible GRE score. Cornell should send out admittance notifications this week so that should be exciting.

@virgo: well I think there is still some hope left. I think NYU tends to make some offers without funding so if you have financial support from elsewhere this could be an option. Good luck with Cornell did you apply to applied math or pure?

Good to know about Madison; I must be on the wait-list since I am neither accepted nor rejected. I may just withdraw my application now since I am 100% sure I won't go there.

I got an acceptance from Courant yesterday. It came as a very pleasant surprise as I was almost sure I won't make it :D . The funding details will follow in a couple of days. All I know is that I'm going to be funded through the Henry M. Mccracken fellowship. My interests are primarily in probability, and I applied in pure math.

do you have any idea if they refund the application fee if you withdraw your application? I know most of the schools say that the application fee is nonrefundable but I was just curious.

Oh...can anyone give opinion whether most(?) grad schools admit domestic and internatonal students at the same time? Is it fine to assume some departments first invite domestic applicants for open house and make decisions afterwards with the admission for internationals later on? I appreciate your tolerance for a newbie poster.

@Iles: for many schools i applied to, they released decisions for both domestic and international students around the same time (Ohio, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Texas Austin), i am not sure about other schools though..

I was feeling that too but was not certain. That will support the guess that many of the schools that have already given out offers(as seen in gradcafe) have already made their, sort of, first round of offers.

Is it considered in poor taste to email the Director of Graduate studies at a program to ask for an update on the status of one's application?

Unless the deadline for the application had only just passed I don't think its in poor taste. I've done it for a few programs (just asking if they had made a decision and if not, when they expect to) and have received brief responses - which is fine since I'm sure they receives lots of similar emails - of which all of them answered my questions and none said I shouldn't have emailed them.

For people in the know: are the Brown(Pure) acceptances on Gradcafe beacuse of offers sent out by Brown or did applicants ask about their status?

From what I observed on gradcafe, when an applicant asks about status within 1 or 2 days of seeing posts on GC, unless they are rejected, they are not notified of their status. But instead are given explanations such as "decisions have been made and offers will be sent out soon", "first round of offers have already been made", etc...keeping one on tenterhooks. Right?

I sent out 28 unofficial email offers for Brown Math PhD Fall 2013 last night (Feb. 11) . An additional 15 are still in consideration, a few of which may be admitted in one or two weeks. The remainder of applications (296 minus 43) will be rejected but I have not contacted them yet. However, I have replied to anyone who sent me an email asking about the status of their application.
