I was basically told "We cannot offer you admission but you were on our short list, so as people reject our offers we'll revisit your application." Isn't that the definition of a waiting list?

Wow! That's a lot. 3 schools for me. I guess many schools just leave several students without a final official response.

From what I was told by a school (in a very rude manner) is that people who are not getting a financial offer or more than likely going to be denied do not have to be notified by April 15th. If that is the case, why have an April 15th deadline?!?!

They have to have some sort of deadline to make all the people holding on to offers decide between schools, or else there would be no reason for them to make a decision right away (maybe wait until July/August...screwing over the people who don't get offers before April even worse). At this point, if you haven't been made an offer, there's a good chance you're not getting one (or maybe you'll get one without funding, which should basically be regarded as a rejection). But some schools might revisit their finances and realize they have a couple more spots, then send out some more offers.

Yes, it is definitely upsetting when schools don't notify the applicants right away when they have been rejected. But if there's even a chance they might want you, they're not going to send out an official rejection until they know for sure. This whole application process is extremely complicated and stressful (to be honest this semester has been the most stressed I've ever been), but the schools are doing their best, and there's not really a perfect way to do it.

I actually got a job at a University in Institutional Research. You can do anything, though. Teach for America is nice if you're domestic as is AmeriCorps, casually working for a year, etc. Your life will not be over!

Accepted a funded masters offer from University of Delaware. Not the best fit in terms of my interests but works very well me for me in other areas (proximity to family). Plus, a professor at my undergrad institution offered to work with me on a research project for the the next semester. So I shall look forward to giving this another go in the future. Good luck to everyone!

I was just accepted off the wait-list at CU Boulder for pure mathematics! TA-ship and all. Thanks everyone for having great and useful discussions for me to read. It was very soothing to my nerves! Good luck to anyone else who might still receive a late offer from a wait-list!
*EDIT: I have also updated my profile on the application thread.
