Be careful of writing a blanket Personal Statement. Often schools ask slightly different questions that merit slightly different responses. Also, some of my schools only wanted 500 words, so my personal statement was only one page single spaced.

Any opinions on this?

Is ~1000 words too long?

Is this true in people's experience? It is true that the wording is different, but I think the general idea of what they want is similar enough that a blanket statement does fine. Is it bad to just send off a generic statement? Like, even if I have nothing interesting to add about the specific school, could it be worthwhile to throw in a sentence or two about how I fit department X well because of Y just to not have a generic statement?

That's like 3 pages, right? I think some programs specifically say no more than 1 or 2 pages, but if there are no length specifications then I would guess it's ok as long as all the stuff in there is necessary and reasonably concise.
